She felt humiliated when her date said he’d seen her ‘fat’ postpartum photos — then his next question stunned her even more
A first date can instantly become uncomfortable when someone makes a careless comment, crossing a boundary. Makeup artist and content creator Melissa Nicole experienced this firsthand when the man she was having dinner with mentioned seeing photos of her from after she had given birth. He referred to them rudely, calling her fat, a comment that immediately offended her. But the conversation became even more surprising when he followed the remark with another question. She shared the experience on her Instagram account under the username @fitbeautybymel on August 10, 2026, explaining why his choice of words was enough for her to rethink the entire date.
Melissa said the man told her he had seen her "fat pictures," referring to the photos from her postpartum period. What stunned her even more was that, after making that comment, he still asked, “Are we going to have a second date?” In the video, Melissa pushed back, saying, “I’m proud of the way I look. I worked hard for this life, and I’m not going to hide it behind a turtleneck.” The issue was not simply what he meant but also how carelessly he chose to say it. She added, “You don’t tell a woman you saw her fat pics after she had a son. That’s postpartum. You don’t call a woman fat.”
She told him there were better ways to discuss someone's past without using hurtful language. Melissa commented, "Think before you speak." She also joked about finishing her wine and food rather than wasting them after deciding the date was going nowhere. As the conversation continued, she became increasingly uncomfortable when he moved closer to her, so she told him to stay back. Respectful communication can make a major difference on a first date, especially when discussing someone's body or appearance.
By the end of the evening, Melissa had already made up her mind about seeing him again. When he asked about a second date, she gave a clear "no." She explained that money or looks were not enough to make someone worth dating if they did not know how to treat a woman properly. Her main advice was to choose words carefully. The experience also reinforced her belief that confidence should not depend on how another person chooses to judge or describe someone's appearance.
One rude remark is enough to end a potential romantic interest. In another incident, a woman was on a date when the man gave her what he seemed to think was a compliment, saying, "You're pretty for a dark girl." Instead of getting angry, she calmly pointed out the problem in his mindset, saying, "And you’re confident for a man with that hairline." The remark left the man struggling to respond, and the mood in the room grew awkward. She then explained how what he said was actually a backhanded compliment, and she wanted to show him how insulting those can be when used so carelessly.
