Teen planned to end everything after visiting their grandparents — until a stranger on a train gave them a reason to hold on
Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of suicide that some readers may find distressing.
People often describe it as fate when the right person appears during someone's darkest moment and changes everything. A Reddit user who goes by u/Boy-Toy4 was devastated after their girlfriend broke up with them, and they were at their lowest. They decided to visit their grandparents one last time before ending it all, but one stranger they met on the train journey gave them something life-changing. On May 20, 2026, the Reddit user expressed their gratitude toward the stranger for helping them see life differently.
"All my life, I've been made fun of. For my appearance, for my clumsiness, for being cringy and emotionally unstable," the post read. On their train journey to see their grandparents, they avoided interaction and eye contact with everyone inside. Until one man approached them with a piece of candy that he had been distributing to every passenger. It was the user's favorite sweet. "He put a hand on my shoulder and put the candy into my hand, said 'here you go' with a smile on his face, and left," they noted. The sweet gesture deeply moved them, as they were looking for one reason to hope that could restore their faith in humanity.
When someone feels they have nothing to live for, even a small moment of kindness can give them a reason to keep going. They immediately began sobbing and started to view life in a positive light. "Maybe I was just looking for one, 'one' proof that people could be nice. And it happened," they expressed. Although they couldn't thank the stranger for that kind gesture, they expressed their gratitude for saving their life that day. Since the incident, they developed a new hobby, began studying harder, and got accepted into the best college in the country. "I don't know who you are, man, and I'll probably never see you again. But know that you saved someone's life," they shared.
The Reddit user's story left internet users emotional, who lauded the person for giving them another shot at life. u/This_Statement_8153 wrote, "It is so amazing how someone can be there when you are in the greatest of need." u/geekyheart225 commented, "I'm glad you're still here. And I hope that your favorite candy means even more to you now." u/andweallenduphere recounted, "I am glad. I was given my own bag of potato chips, full-size, when I was in middle school, babysitting. I started crying."
