Toddler kept disturbing a 70-year-old man recovering from cancer at the beach — but his mother’s response made it even worse

The father never got up to carry his child away, leaving the mother to handle the situation herself.

Kids creating a nuisance in public may make it frustrating for other people around, especially when the parents are not willing to take responsibility. TikTok creator Nicole found herself in a similarly frustrating situation when a toddler was allowed to climb all over the umbrella and belongings beside her 70-year-old father, who was recovering from cancer. She shared the encounter as @colebrewnyc on August 25, 2026, and said the mother’s reaction when she finally came over only made the situation worse.

Nicole explained that she had gone to the beach with her 70-year-old dad, who had recently recovered from cancer and was still in so much pain that he couldn't walk up a flight of stairs. While he was sitting under their umbrella, a toddler covered in food came over and started climbing and swinging on the rusty umbrella pole, which was resting right over her dad's legs. The child's parents were about 20 feet away, occasionally telling him, "Oh, come back” and “What are you doing? Come back," but they didn't get up to stop him. After several minutes, the mother finally came over and pulled the child away. But what frustrated Nicole even more was that the mother didn't apologize for the disruption or even acknowledge them. She simply made a whole commotion with the umbrella while pulling her child away and returned to her spot.

The situation was especially annoying for Nicole because her father was less than a foot away from the child the entire time. She explained that he likes kids and was trying to laugh it off, but she could tell he was getting annoyed because he was already sick and in pain. While sharing about the experience, Nicole questioned why the parents didn't take more responsibility for their child's behavior. She said there was a big difference between a parent struggling to calm a child and simply letting the child do whatever they wanted while expecting everyone else to deal with it. She mentioned that the incident made her extremely angry, especially because her dad was 70 and recovering from cancer. She said parents should be responsible for their children's actions and that she doesn't want to be the kind of parent who treats other people's personal space as though it doesn't matter.

Several individuals also questioned the parents' behavior in the comments. @blondie.built wrote, "Kids never used to be this annoying. It’s a parenting issue 100%." @seeaster added, "Not to be rude but, same with dogs." And @sproutnfauna said, "I genuinely will yell at other people's kids."

While kids can naturally be active and unpredictable in public, parents are still responsible for making sure their behavior doesn't disturb those around them. For example, in another story, a father had a completely opposite reaction compared to this mother when his kid was disturbing a fellow passenger on a flight. A woman on a four-hour flight was repeatedly bothered by a child kicking the back of her seat. When she finally asked the parents to switch seats, the father surprised her by immediately apologizing and moving his child, showing that taking responsibility can make all the difference. Nicole was expecting a similar kind of reaction from the mother. A simple acknowledgement or a small apology can make a big difference.
