Woman escaped violent marriage and spent two years rebuilding a life for herself — then a $30,000 home repair bill brought everything crashing down

The woman who goes by u/Big-Importance2343 shared a post on August 18, 2026, explaining how leaving her violent husband two years ago gave her a chance to move forward, but repair costs for her house left her financially stretched.
The woman left her abusive husband two years ago and has since been trying to keep the household afloat on her own. She bought the house herself before they married, while also supporting her son through college and helping her elderly parents. Over the past two years, the house seemed to demand one repair after another. She paid to fix the dishwasher, washing machine, and refrigerator, replaced the microwave and hot water heater, dealt with plumbing problems, and even called exterminators twice. Then came the breaking point: a quote for a new boiler and repairs to her shower and toilet came to more than $30,000. Meanwhile, her son had also lost his college scholarship after failing a class.
The problems weren't limited to the house. She said a short circuit in the attic wiring caused her hardwired smoke detectors to beep for weeks at a time, and a broken-down shed behind her property turned her backyard into a mosquito hotspot. She said she even got five bites on her leg after simply opening the back door to let her dog out. She felt burdened with financial woes.
She explained that selling the house wasn't an easy solution because she lives in Brooklyn, where a one-bedroom apartment can cost more than her mortgage. She described herself as "house rich and cash poor," with little room to absorb another major expense.
