Woman kept getting credit card offers from ignorant salesperson for late dad — her response left salesperson speechless

One of the last things a person wants to deal with after the passing of their loved one is paperwork or scam calls asking for the deceased. It can be heartbreaking each time it comes around, reminding the other that the person is no longer here. With time, this heartbreak can bring frustration and mixed feelings. A woman–who goes by u/ChloroformScented on Reddit, revealed that when she repeatedly received credit card offers for her deceased dad, she had similar emotions. After being fed up with the continuous calls, she came up with a sleek response that had people applauding.

According to a report from TransUnion, in mid-2023, the United States had 167.2 million credit card users, per Forbes. However, the numbers have significantly jumped up to 542.6 million by the end of 2023. Nevertheless, credit card callers never rest. An eminent example is the woman’s case. She noted that her dad died in 2015, and she was “still getting non-stop credit card offers for him.” For someone dealing with grief, to receive calls as such is not only frustrating but also a bitter reminder that their loved one is no longer around. She decided to do something about it. Her first response was to inform the company of her dad’s passing and get the whole thing over with.

“I got on the line with a woman, told her that my dad was dead and wanted his name taken off their mailing list. She kept insisting she needed to talk to the person the mail was being sent to or his death certificate,” she noted. She continued to stress that her dad was no more and that the calls were a waste of time for both. “I kept telling her he was dead and that he was receiving offers, had no credit card at this company and I was under no obligation to send his death certificate to stop junk mail,” she remarked. However, the company refused to budge and kept pestering her with calls and emails. In order to get rid of the callers, she decided to try a method best suited for them.

When the caller again offered a credit card for her deceased father, the woman replied, “Fine! I’d like to open this credit card under his name.” The caller was confused and noted, “But you just said he was deceased.” The caller finally came to understand the fact and said it out loud. “I just said, ‘Yes,’ and she was silent for a few seconds before transferring me to the correct helpers. In a comment, the woman noted, “They transferred me to cancellations/retention. When I explained my story, the new woman canceled my mail and apologized profusely.”
People were impressed by the woman’s response and applauded her intelligent move. u/Downright_Drewski said, “You broke the script and caused cogs to start turning deep inside her mind, it was the perfect move to make. I can also imagine how difficult having that conversation was for you.” u/MasculineRoster added, “I like to ask people if they have a powerful psychic and a sieve if they want to talk to my dead father. They always hang up on me.” u/Hairy_Love remarked, “I can actually imagine the look on her face, and it’s priceless.”
