Woman made a last-minute coffee stop before her usual walk through the store — minutes later, she learned it kept her out of danger

A routine coffee stop kept her away from a store at exactly the moment she would have been inside.

Sometimes, life protects us in ways we don't understand until much later. A small change of plan, a sudden decision, or even a simple craving can take us somewhere else at exactly the right moment. A woman who goes by u/bigbadmon11 on Reddit shared an experience on September 30, 2026, after an unusual decision during a lunch break saved her life. The woman described that she was about to take a casual walk around a usual store when she decided to stop for coffee. What she found out next stunned her.

She said she usually spent her lunch break walking around a nearby park or store to clear her head after work, but rain changed her plans that day. She arrived at the store around 11:40 a.m. and, at the last second, decided to stop for coffee first, which is a rare choice since she had only done it once six years ago. That one decision saved her from something dangerous. When she returned around 12:10 p.m., police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks were rushing toward the store, so she left. Only afterward did she learn that a shooting had happened there at 11:59 a.m., leaving two people dead. The realization shook her as she thought about how easily she could have been inside.

She said she couldn't stop thinking about how different the day might have been if she had gone straight into the store instead of stopping for coffee. The decision was so unusual that she kept replaying it in her head, especially since she had only made that kind of coffee stop once in six years. She also explained that she had been exhausted from marathon training and had been falling asleep unusually early over the previous few nights. She wanted the coffee to have enough energy to stay awake until her wife came home around 8 p.m. What felt like a simple attempt to get through the evening suddenly seemed much bigger in hindsight.

Despite everything, she said she believed she was okay after she was saved from a potential danger. Nothing had happened to her personally, but realizing how close she had been to the situation left her shaken. She was mostly grateful to be safe and waiting for her wife to come home. The story resonated with people who understood how unsettling it can be to realize that a tiny decision may have changed the course of an entire day. One person, u/strangeloop414, told her, "I’m so glad you’re okay, but that’s really heavy, and survivor's guilt can be so real." Another, u/witchspoon, offered a simple reminder, writing, "Tell your wife thank you and that you love her extra." u/Soft-Impression-163 summed up the strange timing of it all, writing, "I’m so happy you’re actually okay; it's funny how a lot can just happen in minutes."

Sometimes a tiny change to a familiar routine can make a much bigger difference than we realize. Earlier, a story featured a Florida woman who normally took a shower as soon as she got home from work but decided to skip it one evening during a heavy thunderstorm. Shortly afterward, lightning struck her home, sending an electrical surge through the plumbing and causing the shower to explode, even blowing a hole in the bathroom wall. Because she had changed her routine that day, she wasn't in the bathroom when it happened and escaped without injury.
