Woman returned to doctor after he brushed off her concerns and blamed her weight — her ‘fat patients’ comment changed how he treated her

Before addressing her health concerns, she decided to have an open conversation about her doctor's demeanor during her first visit.

Every patient deserves to be heard and to stand up for themselves when they feel their treatment and consultations aren’t up to standard. A woman named Jean Leggett shared a post on Thursday, October 29, 2026, on Threads, under the handle @jeanleggett, detailing how she did the same for herself. During her second appointment with a new doctor, she decided to first address his behavior from her initial visit. She advocated for herself and told him she felt dismissed and judged because of her weight. She then explained to him exactly what he had done that affected her, and it changed his response and approach.

Leggett told her doctor that she had a list of health-related issues she wanted to discuss. However, she first wanted to have an open conversation about his demeanor. She mentioned, “He was not only dismissive but outright rude. I straight up told him it seems like he doesn't like fat patients.” After hearing her words, he was shocked. She then highlighted specific instances that upset her during the first visit. She also told him that she expected him to be professional and unbiased. Following the conversation, she was happy to note that he was attentive and neutral throughout. The woman said that she had prepared for this meeting with a simple agenda. She listed everything she wanted to call out, and then addressed every issue, test, and treatment option she wanted to talk about.

She also told her doctor that she expected to be treated with respect, and that he had to be understanding and give her referrals and other information related to her health when required. According to the patient, the simple act of clear communication had worked with her previous doctor too. Before her doctor moved away, Leggett had developed a great professional relationship with her once they had cleared the air. Turns out, some doctors don’t realize that their remarks, approach, or behavior can feel biased. While some discriminate based on a patient's appearance or weight, others treat them differently because of their gender. In another disappointing instance, a woman was constantly gaslit by doctors.

The patient experienced dizziness, vision problems, and other symptoms, but they were dismissed as weight issues or tiredness. After years without a diagnosis, she decided to take her husband with her to an appointment. As soon as the man spoke up about her symptoms, the doctor immediately became attentive and asked follow-up questions. It was the first time her concerns had been taken seriously in years. Only after her spouse accompanied her did the doctor ask her to undergo tests, including an MRI, which eventually helped her get a diagnosis. It left her wondering how gender and other forms of bias could prevent people from receiving the healthcare they need.
