15-year-old freaked out after spotting hotel-room intruder. A quick recall of her cop stepdad's advice saved her life
Danger is always lurking around and one needs to be smart and vigilant to counter the same. At times, even astute and confident attitudes can get us out of trouble in unexpected ways. A young woman named Josie Bowers vouched for the same after a dangerous experience was averted only due to her intelligent response. The woman recalled a scenario from when she was in her young teenage years and how shrewd advice from her stepdad who is a cop helped save her life. The woman shared a background that she was alone in a hotel room when someone came to her door unannounced.
Bowers was having a shower and was 15 at the time. She did not expect anything untoward to happen but something life-threatening was right outside her door. The woman got out of the shower in her towel and noticed someone was trying to get the door open from the outside. Being 15, with no cell phone service and all alone in the room, Bowers was afraid. She had no time to call for help and had to immediately do something before the people outside broke in. As soon as she saw the door being cracked, she slammed it shut and bolted it. The people outside then realized someone was in the room. Bowers realized there were two men outside her door trying to open it. They slyly called out to her and said, “Services! We came to fix your door.”
On further questioning, while the door was bolted shut, the men let Bowers know they were there to fix a part of the door and needed to come in. The woman sensed they were bluffing and since her door seemed fine, she knew something wasn’t right with the men. Sharing in another video, the woman said, “I didn’t have time to process anything. All I thought was, ‘I’m in a towel, do they have weapons? If I try to stop them, will they hurt me?’” The men assured her that her door’s keypad was broken and needed to be fixed. Bowers decided to open the door a bit and see if the men were speaking the truth.
When she noticed the men in regular attire wearing jeans and t-shirts, she refused to risk anything and switched to a trick her stepdad taught her. The man, who was a police officer, had advised her to never let people know she was alone in such cases. Bowers shrewdly saw the men and said, “I yelled, ‘Hey dad, there’s someone here to fix the door?’” As soon as the woman pretended to call her dad, the men fled from her doorstep. In a follow-up video, the woman cautioned people to be wary, especially when they’re in hotel or dorm rooms.
“I know a lot of dorm rooms have doors like this so please be careful,” she suggested. Bowers also recommended using door stoppers and other materials to make it more safe. People pointed out different suggestions for being safe with doors in such cases. @jojocircusheyhey said, “Putting a suitcase in front of your door helps too.” @blackcrescentcrafts remarked, “I’m glad you’re sharing this. I’m glad you’re safe.” @kaliannb added, “Always use the deadbolt and add a rolled towel at the bottom of your door.”
