28-year-old moved into her best friend’s 75-year-old stepdad’s guesthouse after a failed romance — then their private texts left everyone stunned
Finding a new place to stay can also lead to unusual living arrangements. However, sometimes, it can surprise a person in wholesome ways. That is what happened with TikTok user Rylie Middaugh, a 28-year-old, after a breakup left her in need of a new home. As reported by PEOPLE, on Sunday, July 5, 2026, instead of staying alone, she moved into a guesthouse owned by 75-year-old Tom Ward. The simple decision connected two lives in ways neither imagined. Her post on June 23, 2026, shared through her account @ryliephoto, later described how their daily routine messages slowly shaped a close and unexpected bond.
Rylie moved to be closer to her partner, but unfortunately, things didn't work out, and the relationship ended. With nowhere to go, the woman remembered that her best friend's stepdad, Tom, had some property. She asked if she could stay in his guesthouse, and he welcomed her without a second thought. Over time, the duo began to bond over messages. The 28-year-old explained that their private chats were mostly about inquiries for help with everyday tasks and simple check-ins that eventually built trust between them and gave birth to a new friendship. Some texts were practical, like Tom asking for help returning Amazon orders, while others were sweet gestures, such as him checking if she wanted food. She shared, "Tom and I come from completely different generations, but we’ve found so much common ground through simple things like sharing stories, watching sunsets, or just sitting down to eat a meal together.”
Tom was living alone for many years after becoming a widower, while Rylie was also starting over after a relationship that did not work out. Daily routines between them were soon filled with small and funny incidents that made their friendship stronger. One moment came when the elderly man misplaced his phone and asked the youngster to call it, only to realize his hearing aids were connected to the ringtone. As they moved around the house trying to locate it, they ended up following sound changes instead of searching directly. She later said, "It was such a funny introduction to living together." Over time, the texts became more meaningful. The elderly homeowner, who sells handmade items at a farmers' market, would sometimes message her for help. They eventually even hung out together, watching the sunsets in Oregon.
Rylie shared, "I’ve always felt like I’m a bit of an old soul, so having a roommate like Tom has been exactly what I needed.” New friendships can also be formed through unexpected situations. In another heartwarming incident, a woman who had recently moved to a quieter neighborhood decided to reach out to a mother she had never spoken to before. She left a small note and a gift, feeling nervous while waiting for a reply, unsure if it would be welcomed. The next day, she received a response. The parent thanked her for the kind gesture and even suggested a playdate between her kids and the new resident's children. The simple act made way for them to bond and hang out, turning worry into comfort and a hopeful new connection.
