Taking the first step with courage can open the door to lasting friendship. After moving from New Jersey to Connecticut and settling into a quieter routine, 35-year-old Sarah Sarcone decided to reach out to a neighbor she had never spoken to before, hoping it could turn into a friendship. As reported by PEOPLE, she later shared the experience on TikTok on April 12, 2026, under @sarah_sarcone, where she described leaving a small note and a gift and waiting nervously for a response while unsure what would come next. Then came an unexpected reply from the neighbor that left her smiling from ear to ear.

@sarah_sarcone Sometimes you have to put yourself out there if you want to meet new people, makes new friends, or just connect with others! I’ll let you know how this goes! 🩷 #momfriends #motherhood #connecticut #momsover30 #makingfriendsasadults ♬ original sound - sarah_sarcone

Sarah shared in an update what the neighbor texted her the following day. The response she received came as a pleasant surprise and quickly eased her worry. Her neighbor replied warmly, and she shared, “She texted me last night saying thank you,” and showed interest in meeting soon. She suggested arranging a casual playdate between their children, which turned the simple exchange into something friendly and welcoming instead of uncertain. She also added that she bumped into her neighbor’s husband, who expressed his gratitude for the gift as well.

In the initial TikTok clip, Sarah explained that she had recently moved and noticed another mother nearby with a toddler and a newborn, which felt very similar to her own situation. Wanting to try to build a connection, she prepared a small gift and wrote a handwritten note introducing herself, sharing her number, and suggesting possible playdates or outdoor meetups. “It is just nice to have someone close by to connect with.” She admitted she felt nervous while doing it, unsure how it would be received, and reflected that building friendships as an adult can feel difficult. She also shared that rejection in friendships “hurts a little bit more,” especially when people are already feeling alone.

Many people go through similar feelings, where the wish for connection exists, but fear often stops them from making the first move, even when something simple could lead to a positive outcome. She expressed that she was not fully sure the note would lead anywhere, but the response changed her outlook. She said fear of rejection often holds people back, yet “it's worth a shot,” because even small actions can lead to real and meaningful connections. She now encourages people to be brave and step out of their comfort zone, since you never know what positive outcome it might bring.

With personal connections feeling more limited in modern life, people everywhere are increasingly seeking friendship and community. In another incident, a 42-year-old woman who felt lonely after moving to a new town turned to Facebook in 2024 to find new friends online. She shared a simple post asking for companionship and was surprised when many people responded quickly. She said, “The numbers kept going up and up and up,” as her small effort grew into a large, friendly group that started meeting regularly and building real connections.
