40-year-old was thrilled to get a surprise 10% discount while dining—until the receipt revealed the awkward reason behind it
Your eyes would light up if you spotted an unexpected discount on your restaurant bill. A TikTok user named Dee, however, was unsure how to react after seeing a 10% discount on her invoice at Bonefish Grill, according to a report from The Mary Sue, on Sunday, June 14, 2026. In her post shared under her handle @moorelifemoorelove, on May 2, 2026, the woman revealed that the deduction in the amount was not the surprising part. Rather, the reason behind it was what left her speechless.
@moorelifemoorelove Went out to eat and they gave me a 10% AARP discount…I’m 40 😭 clearly I’ve been carrying life a little too well 😂 @Bonefish Grill #RespectfullyConfused ♬ original sound - LoverboyMarcus96
Showing her bill, Dee revealed she purchased two items that were $5.50 and $21.90, respectively. If you do the math, it should total $27.40, except it didn’t. On her receipt, she saw a 10% discount that brought the amount to $26.88, including taxes. Undoubtedly, she was happy to see the few dollars deducted, but at what cost? It was an AARP discount. “I’m 40. Clearly, I’ve been carrying life a little too well,” she remarked. According to Senior Living, AARP stands for the American Association of Retired Persons. It is a nonprofit organization that offers benefits and other perks to people who are 50 and above.
One of the major perks is discounts at different restaurants and other stores. According to the AARP, Bonefish Grill does offer 10% off on food and non alcoholic beverages. What didn’t add up, however, was that she had clearly not become a member, nor provided any details. It seemed like an honest mistake, and the restaurant likely confirmed that by commenting on the clip. “Going to pretend we didn't see this,” they wrote. Dee still flaunted her bill.
The woman was surprised but took it as a win. That’s what the internet loved the most. @tmoneyd2 wrote, “I don’t care. I am confident enough to accept any discount in this economy.” @msdaishea added, “That would definitely be my spot now.” @statsweetjo remarked, “I’ll take it, please and thank you. Gas is expensive.”
A majority believe that when faced with such mishaps, you should just take the discount. This is what a couple did in another scenario. A Reddit user revealed that he was at a restaurant with his girlfriend when she dropped her earring. She bent to pick it up, and at the same time, he reached into his pocket to take out his wallet and pay the bill. Somehow, the simultaneous movement made it look like he was pulling out a ring to propose, and she was bending out of excitement and surprise.
As the customers erupted in applause and cheers, the staff’s attention soon turned toward the table. When they also believed he was popping the question, they offered free champagne and dessert, as well as a $70 discount. The duo was too embarrassed to clear up the confusion and went with the flow, but who would say no to such a solid deal? They didn’t get engaged that day, but surely made a core memory while enjoying complimentary service from the restaurant.
