41-year-old woman thought a lump near her ribs was a hernia from working out — 24 hours later, a hospital visit turned into an unexpected miracle
A strange pain or a change in the body can leave someone searching for an explanation. For 41-year-old Sammy Evans, a lump near her ribs seemed like a possible result of pushing herself too hard at the gym. She decided to visit her general practitioner to find out what was wrong, expecting a routine medical check. In the latest segment of ITV's This Morning, Evans revealed she had no idea that the lump, which doctors initially suspected was a hernia, would lead to a life-changing surprise within just 24 hours.
Evans had lost around 10 stone and believed this explained why her periods had stopped. She also felt heavy and uncomfortable, so her doctor arranged tests to investigate her symptoms. A pregnancy test initially appeared negative, although a faint line raised questions. After taking another test at home, Evans received a positive result. Hours later, she developed severe stomach pain and went to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that she was in labor. She was nine months pregnant and had not known she was expecting a child. The new mother later explained that she had mistaken the pain for period cramps because she had never experienced typical labor before. Doctors performed a scan and found the baby's heartbeat, but Evans still struggled to understand how far along the pregnancy was.

Her partner, Triston McKend, was working in London while she was on the south coast. When she first texted him that she was pregnant, he replied calmly and asked her to keep him updated. Around 45 minutes later, she told him she was in labor. Evans recalled, "I am just lying there crying, quite sad," describing how she felt while waiting to give birth. McKend rushed to reach her, but their son Noah had already been born by the time he arrived.
A doctor on the interview program explained that Evans had experienced a cryptic pregnancy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition occurs when someone discovers they are pregnant very late, sometimes during labor. This can happen when symptoms are absent or mistaken for other conditions. Evans had also believed her weight loss explained her missed periods, while the shape of her stomach gave her no clear sign of pregnancy.

Unexpected deliveries are rare but can still happen. In another similar incident, a 47-year-old woman began experiencing unusual stomach pain without realizing she was pregnant. She and her husband had assumed the changes in her body were linked to menopause or weight gain. Even when her stomach started to grow, they did not suspect that a baby was on the way. However, a sudden trip to the hospital brought news that neither of them had expected, leaving the couple with little time to prepare for their growing family.

The doctors told the woman she was pregnant and about to give birth. Within an hour, she welcomed an eight-pound baby girl named Carolyn Rose. Although the couple was caught off guard, they quickly embraced their new arrival. Her husband, Jason, shared how he responded whenever the baby cried, saying, "When she cries, I am there." Family and friends also stepped in with baby supplies, including strollers and bassinets, helping the couple adjust to parenthood unexpectedly.
