48-year-old lawyer she went on a date with bragged ‘women date me for my money’ — then one detail from her background check shut him up
Confidence can be admirable, but an unchecked ego often collapses the moment it meets reality. Instagram user Lyz Lenz (@lyzlenz) had gone out on a date with a lawyer who couldn't stop bragging about how women only dated him for his money. Little did he know she had done a background check on him before meeting up, and her one revelation quickly shut him up. Posting the interesting story with her Instagram followers on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Lenz shared his immediate reaction to her honest response.
The then 41-year-old had gone out with a 48-year-old lawyer. During the date, he decided to poke fun at women who only dated him for his money. Lenz, who was aware that he was a government employee, had already looked up his salary, which was public information. She revealed to him, "I'm not going to date you for your money because I make more money than you." Upon hearing the shocking truth, he was "flabbergasted," according to Lenz. To cover up his ego taking a hit, he immediately blamed her for being "too old" for him to date, and that he was looking for a younger woman to have children with.
As he began fumbling, she chose not to pursue the date further and stopped seeing him. However, she shared that she is reminded of the lawyer whenever she comes across men online complaining about women dating men only for their money. Often, society mocks women for earning less than men, yet the same critics seem uncomfortable when they encounter women who earn more. It creates a frustrating double standard where women seem unable to win either way. After the man made the distasteful remark, she quickly learned enough about his character to realize there was no reason to waste any more time pursuing him.
Soon after her post gained traction, many users praised Lenz for her comeback and for doing due diligence before going out with him. @dpt_to_do noted, "Classic. He wanted to humble you when his ego is bruised." @jbonusgranny recounted, "I had a boyfriend who broke up with me when he realized I earned more than him." @josh.abzy mentioned, "Interesting how insecure he is. He believed money was the only thing he had to offer. He then expected to be rejected, now that money was not a lure for you. So, he rejected you first. Sad little man." Meanwhile, @aidaelena4 joked, "Why are you afraid of gold diggers, when you got no gold?"
