He called her a 'green flag' for only dating one man — until she revealed he had passed, and what her date said next made her walk away

He soon realized he had messed up, later blaming the awkward remark on feeling anxious and overstimulated.

Awkward and nervous situations sometimes make people say unhinged things that come off as offensive. TikTok user Alex (@alexkhourii) was impressed to learn that his date had only dated one person in her life. However, when she revealed that he had passed away, his response made her walk away. Sharing the story with his TikTok followers on February 12, 2026, the creator explained how his one comment made him lose out on a "green flag" date.

Alex had recently gone out on a date with a "green flag" woman. She later dropped the bomb that the only person she had dated had passed away a while ago, and she has now returned to dating. Alex, who was confused by her revelation, did not know how to respond. Trying to lighten the mood, he told her, "You know what, if it makes you feel any better, I kind of wish my ex died too." While the woman was stunned by his response, he assumed that he needed to repeat himself. He soon realized that he had messed up and blamed it on being anxious and feeling overstimulated. However, she immediately walked away in disgust.

Some people are less emotionally expressive or may lack the emotional intelligence needed to respond appropriately when someone shares their grief. While Alex may have wanted to sympathize when his date revealed that her ex had passed away, he seemed unsure of how to react. Assuming that his dark humor might lighten the mood, he made a joke, but it only backfired. Dark humor is rarely appropriate in sensitive situations, especially when an individual is making a first impression. Instead, Alex could have offered his condolences and been honest about not knowing how to console her. Unfortunately, the joke only made things worse and caused her to walk away.

Soon after his post gained over 48,000 likes online, many users chimed in to react to his biggest fumble and suggested what he could have said instead. @Cayne Gray remarked, "The best thing you can learn is to stop attempting to relate to people when you don't know how to respond and start asking questions." @risvalenti commented, "One time a man said to me, 'Well, you better be over him because I don't share,' talking about my dead husband." @user7393649 mentioned, "But if she were a real one, she would've understood that you clearly didn't mean it and was 'trying' to make her feel better." @nataliadltr01 joked, "I think she went back to the no-dating scene after that date."
