For many, making small talk during rides elevates the whole experience. It keeps things from becoming awkward and gives the driver and the passenger a way to make the journey pleasant. Unfortunately, one person’s ride didn’t go that way. The Reddit user who goes by u/WildBillJanny shared their story on October 1, 2026, revealing that the driver started the conversation by bringing up the subject of kids, and they simply responded. He then asked if they had children or planned to have any in the future. To their surprise, their honest answer seemed to disrupt the flow of the conversation, ultimately leading to a 1-star rating.

The passenger mentioned they used only Uber for business trips and were returning from the airport as usual. They had a 5-star rating because they rarely bothered drivers, tipped well, and adhered to basic travel etiquette. During this trip, the driver initiated a conversation about children, sharing details about his own kids. Eventually, he asked the passenger if they were a parent. The passenger replied, “No, it just hasn't been in the cards.” According to the passenger, this single revelation seemed to change the driver’s demeanor, making him appear irritated. Before the passenger knew it, they were dropped off, only to discover that they had received a 1-star rating. This incident tarnished their perfect rating, bringing it down to 4.69. What left the passenger most stunned was that a topic initiated by the driver turned out to be the reason for the unpleasantness of the ride.

The customer had no issues with how the conversation went, making it hard to comprehend the situation. Even commenters couldn’t see why an honest response yielded such a negative reaction. u/Redcarborundum wrote, “Two can play that game. Give him 1 star back.” u/Federal-Net-7011 added, “A new low for a driver.” u/Mr_Perv3000 remarked, “As an Uber driver, it’s our job to make things as pleasant as possible. Sorry this happened to you." Professionalism and ethics are crucial pillars of the industry and can make or break an interaction. In another instance, a passenger was creeped out by an Uber driver after hearing the music he played.

They were returning from a grocery shopping trip when they heard a song that sounded like it had their name. Charmed by the coincidence, they decided to look it up but couldn’t find it anywhere. They later concluded it was likely a song created by AI, but never once thought it could be connected to them. It was only later when they got home that they realized the chilling link. The name of the song was “Pink Bag Mondays,” and they later recalled, “My grocery bag was pink. And it was Monday.” They were encouraged to report the driver because the driver had created an AI song using their details without consent.
