6-year-old girl who saved her mom after a seizure revealed why she had memorized 911 — the reason is heartbreaking
In moments of crisis, even the youngest individuals can show remarkable courage. Last year, six-year-old Pearl stepped up in a way that few would expect when her mother, Carole, suddenly collapsed at home in Croydon. As recently reported by The Standard, the incident left both Pearl and her 4-year-old sister Amelia alone in a frightening situation. What made the story even more emotional was how Pearl had already memorized the emergency number, a small act that later proved life-saving and deeply moved many who heard about it.
During the moment, she managed to unlock her mother’s phone and call for help, telling the handler that her mum was “lying on the sofa” and not waking up, adding that “her eyes keep opening and closing.” Even though she said, “I’m really, really scared,” she stayed focused and followed instructions carefully, confirming that her mother was still breathing by watching her chest rise and fall. She later revealed that she had memorized how to call 999, equivalent of 911 in the U.S., because she deeply loved her mother and wanted to be prepared in case something ever happened. She noted that her love for her mother pushed her to be prepared in advance, and even the simple act turned life-saving.
Emergency responders arrived within minutes and praised the young girl’s actions. Paramedic Charlotte Aisbitt described both Pearl and Amelia as “incredible,” adding that “they saved their mum’s life.” The girls stayed calm and even helped gather items needed for the hospital. Carole was later treated for a serious bleed on the brain and made a good recovery. In situations like these, it often shows how simple awareness and preparation can make a life-saving difference, even in the hands of a child.
The family later met the emergency team, who helped them and received special recognition for their bravery. Carole expressed her pride, saying it was one of the proudest moments of her life. "I knew Pearl was smart, but you don’t know how a child will cope in an emergency," she added. Officials also highlighted the importance of basic emergency knowledge, with one stating, “Teaching your child how to call 999 in an emergency could save a life.” Pearl’s actions not only saved her mother but also showed how courage and quick thinking can come from the most unexpected places.
As shown in the incident above, young souls can also come to the rescue during emergencies. In another similar incident, an 8-year-old girl named Adriana Wailes helped save her father, John Wailes, when he suddenly began acting unwell at home. She noticed him shaking and struggling to speak, and quickly realized something was seriously wrong. Despite being scared, she stayed calm and called 911 right away, clearly explaining what was happening so help could reach them fast.
During the call, she told the dispatcher, “My dad is shaking,” and also shared that he had brain cancer. As the situation became more serious, she followed instructions carefully and even checked his breathing when asked. Her father, who later woke up in an ambulance, said it was his first seizure and he had lost consciousness shortly after it began. He later expressed pride in her actions, saying her calm response showed maturity and strength in a difficult moment.
