81-year-old opened up to a subway stranger about her fear of flying that kept her from home for years — then came an offer she never expected

A woman named Molly Selin, who goes by @mollyyyyyyyyyyy4 on TikTok, shared a post about an inspiring conversation she had with 81-year-old Maria Alvarez on an MTA train in Brooklyn. As they got to know more about each other, the Puerto Rican woman revealed that she had a fear of flying, which kept her away from family. Something about that exchange stuck, and the young stranger made an offer that transformed their lives.
Selin had her AirPods in and was ready to go home and relax until a stranger initiated a conversation by asking whether she had been traveling. When she revealed she was just back from Spain, Alvarez’s eyes lit up. The 27-year-old recounted that the look reminded her of her own grandma, who viewed the world with possibility and eagerness. As their interaction continued, the elderly woman mentioned how she loved the idea of exploring the world; she even hoped to visit her hometown in Puerto Rico, but had a fear of flying. That’s when the commuter said, “This sounds crazy because we don't really know each other, but if you ever want to go somewhere, I'd be happy to fly with you.”

The elderly passenger shared that she was widowed at 28, lost her parents within three months, and later lost her daughter when she was 56. Before Selin knew it, she was empathizing with Alvarez. According to ABC News, when the 27-year-old mentioned that she hadn’t tried paella, a popular Spanish dish, despite visiting, Alvarez insisted that she come over and have a bite. What followed was an unexpected friendship. The duo hung out every week, and Selin enthusiastically posted their adventures online.
Their adventures caught the attention of Delta, and the airline even commented that they would be glad to help Alvarez see her hometown. Other organizations like Hilton and Discover Puerto Rico also joined to help the duo make the trip. In a video posted on July 5, 2026, Selin shared a glimpse from the airport. What once seemed like a dream that could never come true became a wholesome memory, all because of a newfound friendship. For the 81-year-old, it has been a life-changing experience. “I never had anything like this happen to me,” she remarked.
