A nonagenarian got a second chance at life after a group of teenagers spotted danger at her house and rushed in to help her, per Island Echo. Five teens between the ages of 16 and 18 - Sacha Hewson, Mark Meyer, Izzy Meade, Matt Pritchard, and Elliott Brown - were enjoying their vacation in Hampshire, England. They walked past the elderly woman’s home and noticed something unusual. The woman was relaxing in one of the rooms when she saw the teenagers barge into her home with a frantic sense of urgency. To her luck, the youngsters walked in not to cause trouble but to make a life-saving rescue.

“We were walking back from the beach and walked past the lady’s house and we noticed there was smoke filtering from the front door,” Hewson recalled. It could have been anything, but the group of five didn’t want to leave a chance of regret and decided to give in to their instincts. Feeling something was off, they went and loudly knocked on the door. “We went into her house and started calling out for anyone inside to make them aware of what was happening," Hewson added. After several attempts, when they received no response, they got even more worried and decided to enter the house.

They began looking around to see where the fire was coming from and if they could spot any residents. To their surprise, they found a 97-year-old woman resting in her room. The elderly woman was hard of hearing and hadn’t heard the fire alarms go off. “She didn’t know what was happening," Hewson remarked. She had no clue that there was smoke or danger until the group barged in and alerted her. Meyers, one of the teenagers, looked around and realized that the smoke was coming from the microwave. According to N8 Fire & Safety, the first thing to do in case of a suspected microwave fire is to switch it off and unplug it.

The next steps require inspection and checking, but the teenagers did just right by unplugging the appliance. They then doused the smoke coming from a heated package inside the microwave. They luckily reached in time before the appliance could erupt into flames. They even removed the appliance from the property and opened windows and doors to push out the smoke. When all of it was done, the youngsters further assisted the woman by calling her an ambulance and even contacting a relative who arrived to help. Later on, the firefighters also made their way to conduct a safety check and ensure there was no damage.

Group Manager Jeff Walls at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said, “The early action taken by members of the public prevented this incident from becoming more serious.” The five were on holiday, they didn’t need to go out of their way to check on the woman. Nevertheless, when they noticed the smoke, they prioritized humanity and astutely intervened in time to avert a major danger. They saved the woman and her home from much damage and truly deserve recognition and applause. The woman eventually recovered and had no serious injuries. She returned to her home, safe and soon, thanks to the youngsters.
