A 22-year-old helped a new mom clean up her baby’s spit-up at a café — then she walked up to his date for a reason he didn’t expect
Kind gestures from strangers can leave a lasting impression. A mother spending time with her infant at a café recently experienced one such moment when a young man stepped in to help during an embarrassing situation. Instagram user Alex Hodges later shared the story online, explaining how the encounter stayed with her long after it happened. The story was posted under the username @alexfugman on May 23, 2026. While the 22-year-old's actions initially helped solve a small problem, the interaction eventually led Alex to approach his date at the café with a message she felt needed to be shared.
Alex shared how she was holding her baby when a 22-year-old walked up and asked, “Can I get you a towel?” Confused, she asked why. He then pointed out that her baby's spit-up was running down her back. Feeling embarrassed because she had not noticed it herself, she agreed that she could use a wipe. Later, when the man's date arrived, the mom went up to his table and thanked him once again for his assistance. She intended to give the woman a hint of his kind deed. "I wanted his date to know she had picked a good person to go out with," she remarked. The stranger had not only brought a towel but had also helped clean up the mess, making a stressful situation much easier for her to handle.
The mom said she was struck by how calmly and confidently he approached her. Instead of ignoring the situation or making her feel uncomfortable, he respectfully offered help. She added how she hoped her tiny tot would become as charming and wonderful as this person, reaching out to a mom who has a lot on her hands. "What a sweet boy," she expressed. The young man proved he was a green flag through his thoughtful actions. Thankfully, there are many people like him in the world.
In another incident, a single mother who had not been on a date in years was forced to cancel plans. She apologized and said, “I'm sorry, I can't go out today,” expecting the date to be postponed. Instead, the man asked if he could briefly stop by to drop off a gift he had already bought. A short while later, he arrived at her door, handed over the package, and left. Inside was a Rapunzel-themed backpack for her daughter and some chocolates. Surprised by the gesture, she later wondered, “Men like that exist?” as she reflected on the unexpected care he had shown. The moment left her hopeful that genuine and considerate people are still out there.
