A former student walked into a school with a gun — CCTV caught the moment the principal jumped him to prevent a tragedy
School safety often depends on how quickly people react in critical moments. A recent incident at Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma brought this into focus when a former student, Victor Hawkins, entered the building with a weapon. As reported by KKTV 11 Alert, the event took place on April 7, 2026, and was later shared through surveillance footage that showed what happened inside the school lobby. The video captured the tense moments as the school principal, Kirk Moore, rushed in to act, while students and staff were present nearby, unaware of how quickly the situation would unfold.
The clip, shared by KVUE, captured how the former student entered the lobby, immediately pointing his gun at the students present there to scare them. The latter were frozen with worry. As he proceeded further inside, within a second, Moore spotted him and knew he had to intervene. The principal stepped in and tackled the attacker, stopping the situation before it could turn into a shooting. He appeared to try firing, but investigators said the weapon jammed, as per ABC 7 News. As he attempted to fix it, Moore rushed out and brought him down onto a bench. During the struggle, the gun was at one point aimed at Moore, and he was shot in the leg before the weapon was taken away by another staff member.
The quick response ensured that no students were harmed during the incident. “The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives,” said Hunter McKee, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman. Moore was taken to the hospital and later reported to be in stable condition. The suspect was taken into custody soon after, and authorities confirmed that he had entered the school with serious intent. This moment shows how fast decisions can shape outcomes in critical situations.
Further details revealed that Hawkins had planned a larger attack targeting the principal, staff, and eventually himself, and later admitted his intentions during questioning. He now faces multiple charges, including attempted intent to kill and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Court records also noted that he was influenced by past incidents, which raised further concern about the motive behind his actions. He is currently held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court for trial on May 8, 2026, where the case will proceed, and further legal action will be determined based on the charges filed against him.
While such horrifying cases are not uncommon, thanks to some good Samaritans, many lives are saved. What is to be commended is the selfless and prompt act from Moore. He responded almost impulsively, not caring for his own life and trying his best ot hold down the shooter before he could do any damage. His bravery deserves applause.
