Amazon driver was on her delivery route when she spotted flames — she called 911 and then started banging on the door
Some professionals go way beyond their call of duty to help people around them. However, no one had expected that an Amazon delivery driver would end up saving a family's house while doing her usual deliveries. The woman, Ciara Aschan, was doing a delivery to a Des Moines house when she noticed smoke emitting from a neighboring property. She immediately realized that the house was potentially on fire and called emergency services. Ciara also went a step further to check if anyone was stuck in the house, per KCCI Des Moines.
"I noticed the flames coming out of the top of, like, the attic area on the house. And I'm like, oh my God, I think that house is on fire," Ciara recounted. She called 911 and rushed to the house after she saw a car parked outside the house. She knocked on all the doors in hopes that if anyone was inside the house, they would hear her and get out safely. There was an open door and Ciara managed to get inside and check if anyone needed her help. Thankfully, there was no one inside the house. Soon enough, the fire department arrived on the site. They were able to restrict the damage caused by the fire to the second floor of the house.
"It saved a lot of damage — it saved the house. If somebody had been in there, obviously, we could have saved a life," Mike Morgan from the Des Moines Fire Department remarked. No one was injured during the incident. However, the fire department hadn't figured out the cause of the house fire. It was probably caused by a stove kept on the floor. Ciara had focused all her attention on the house when she noticed the blaze, per PEOPLE. "I just focused my entire attention on that house because there was a car in the driveway. Normally, a car in the driveway means somebody's home. So that made me panic." While the firefighters arrived at the location in six minutes after the call, Ciara knocked on the neighbor's door to do the delivery and inform them about the fire.
"I had knocked on the door because if they were home. I was going to let them know, 'Hey, your neighbor's house is on fire. You might want to leave.' If the fire were to spread, then that would be alarming, but they contained it pretty fast," Ciara shared. "Multiple fire companies at the scene credit the quick thinking and utilization of the emergency dispatch system for resulting in the rapid response and suppression of this fire. A special thank you to the Amazon driver for taking a minute to investigate the scene to provide thorough information to the call takers who sent the appropriate response," the fire department pointed out in a statement to the outlet.
Ciara received a letter of gratitude from the homeowner's daughter, who revealed that the house was under renovation. "She essentially just said that they were renovating the house for her and her three daughters and that it was her mom and stepdad's home and that thankfully nobody was there." Amazon thanked her for her quick thinking and service as well. Even Ciara was pretty proud of what she managed to do. "Not all superheroes wear capes. They wear Amazon vests," she remarked.
