It’s easy to be drawn to someone who sparks your interest. But for TikTok user Canned Dude (@canned.dude), the experience came with an unexpected twist. The man was traveling on a 12-hour flight with a "cute" Japanese girl seated next to him. The long flight turned into an impromptu movie date, but everything came crashing down when he learned her age. Sharing the funny story with his TikTok followers, the American revealed the importance of asking one particular question before interacting with someone new.

The American content creator badly wanted to initiate a conversation with the Japanese girl, hence he inquired about the Harry Potter book she was reading. However, he soon realized that they did not speak the same language. So, he suggested they watch the movie "Interstellar" in English and Japanese individually. Everything was going smoothly, but as they landed, she asked him how old he was. When he asked her to guess, she first assumed him to be 21 or 25; however, he turned out to be a 28-year-old man, talking to a 19-year-old college student.

The man immediately felt icky having talked to a girl who was almost a decade younger than him. He awkwardly wished her the best, but she insisted on getting his Instagram ID. When he hesitated, she quipped that he was almost her brother's age; her brother being 23 years old! He later agreed to exchange IDs, but decided to stay friends. At the end of the video, he emphasized that it was important to ask someone’s age before pursuing any kind of romantic interaction. The American did the right thing by keeping a distance from a woman who was much younger than him.

Most people might consider 19 a legal age, but the age gap in a relationship contributes to many factors, including emotional maturity. While some use the legal age as an excuse to exploit young girls, the TikTok user respected the age gap and did the right thing by choosing to get friend-zoned. Soon after his post went viral, many viewers shared their thoughts.

@EyeOnChina mentioned, "Nice story, but the ending didn't need to be the end ...28 and 19 is fine ... 19 is an adult and so is 28. You didn't have to date her, but just kept a new friend." @Neuman advised, "You might feel old, but not old enough to know that connections like that are rare. Just enjoy the moments with the people life brings your way." @freakyd1nkie remarked, "I think you did the right thing. That's totally weird to me, too. Sooner or later, you'll notice you guys are not on the same mindset if it continues."
