The media that children consume matters and a prominent example is that of 8-year-old Jaxson Dempsey, per WNEP. The little boy managed to save his 20-month-old sister, Leila, after recalling an episode of a show he watched on Nickelodeon. The episode of the show, “The Substitute,” aired 4 years ago on the children’s channel, and featured wrestler and actor John Cena. He made a powerful and inspiring appearance, showing kids how to respond in cases of emergency to save someone’s life. Right enough, the 8-year-old paid careful attention and used the skill and save his infant sister.

According to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), the media that kids are exposed to has a significant effect on their overall development. Dr. Michelle Yang, a CHOC resident, noted that it is very important for parents to monitor what and how much media their kids consume. It can affect their development, behavior and several other factors. However, watching educational and inspiring content can also reap positive fruit, as little Jaxson did. The episode he watched became a crucial life lesson to save a life.

It features John Cena dressed in a get-up, making his way towards a group of kids with a dummy. He teaches them important skills such as CPR and reportedly even how to save someone while choking. Using a dummy as his best friend, the actor skilfully showed kids how to avoid panic and do the best they can during unprecedented situations. The clip became a useful one, not just for the group of kids seated there but for hundreds watching the show. One of these kids was Jaxson. When he was in the backseat of his dad, Matt’s car with his baby sister, he noticed she was choking.

“I noticed she was starting to choke on a chicken nugget from McDonald's. I told my dad to pull over,” Jaxson recalled. The little girl was making no audible sounds for anyone to figure out. Her brother vigilantly noticed her silent distress and rendered astute action. "If I were by myself and Jaxson wasn't with me and I stopped and gave her a chicken nugget, I wouldn't hear her choking. She wasn't coughing; she wasn't panicking. She just had no air going through; she wasn't breathing," the dad recalled. Before his dad could intervene, the boy had already gotten to work. He recalled the prominent life-saving technique.

"It's called ‘The Substitutes’ on Nickelodeon, and in the very first episode, John Cena was on it and in the last part, he showed how to save someone when they're choking," Jaxson said. He quickly began patting his sister on her back to dislodge the food stuck in her airway. Within moments of his determined and focused efforts, Leila was finally able to breathe. “Thank God Jaxson was there because, without him, I don't know if Lelia would be here,” Matt remarked. He commended his son for being calm, brave and even smart enough to recall the right lesson in time. "He amazes us every day, you know—some of the things he says and does, and his actions. We're simply blessed to have the child that he is, and the things that he does for his family, his friends, for his little sister. He's a good big brother," the dad remarked.
