Boy was bullied for wearing older brother's Navy uniform to school — then came immediate response from Navy and his brother
Having a sibling for many is like having immeasurable support for the rest of their lives. The mischief and fights are inevitable but the support and brotherhood in this bond are unmatched. When 11-year-old Isaiah Picklesimer was bullied for wearing his older brother’s Navy uniform to school, the man stepped up for him in the most supportive way, as per WUSA News. The middle-school boy was missing his brother, who was stationed at a Navy post away from home and wore the uniform as an act of love and respect. When he was bullied for the same, the older brother and the Navy had the perfect plan to teach the bullies an important lesson.
Pickelsimer noted that he immensely loved his brother and always wanted to be his strongest supporter. “I love him and I support him. My brother is a hero to me,” he remarked. He was missing his sibling, so he thought of wearing his brother's uniform to school. He donned the uniform with blue camouflage pattern with pride. However, the students picked on him and made ruthless remarks. “Some kids bullied me and really hurt my feelings. They said that my uniform was pajamas. That I was a joke. I said, ‘You don't understand, I'm trying to support my brother,’” the 11-year-old recalled. Picklesimer’s mom Mellanie posted about the cruel happening and things turned around quickly.
People started showing support for the boy, starting with the Naval Center in Charlotte, Washington DC and followed by countries all over the world. While Picklesimer was receiving the global digital support, a fellow student named Nate Mills, who was in the 7th grade and also happened to be a neighbor, joined the sentiment, per WCNC. He, too, proudly put on the uniform of his grandfather who was in the army in 1981. Mills noted that middle school is “hard” and that he didn’t appreciate the bullying and wanted to stand in solidarity with Picklesimer. Soon, others joined the purpose and went viral on the internet.
What followed was only pride and appreciation for the boy for supporting his brother and others like him. Picklesimer was also invited to a pinning ceremony. It filled his heart to receive a coin for his brave choice to be himself and express his love for his brother and the Navy. Several officers commended the boy, not just for wearing the uniform but for supporting and standing boldly even though he was seemingly alone and different from his peers.
Furthermore, the 11-year-old’s brother was also given permission to come home and surprise the kid with a heart-melting reunion. After a seven-hour-long drive, the reunion between the brothers was a wholesome and tear-jerking one. “He said I’ve got you, I’m here now,” Picklesimer recalled. Mellanie, too, lauded her son for not changing his mind about supporting his brother. “He was willing to get through peer pressure and still do what he felt in his heart,” she proudly remarked. After all of the trials, the only determination the little boy had was to not let his brother down. Mills and Picklesimer unapologetically flaunt their uniforms to school every Friday, leading by example that it is always a rewarding experience to be exactly who you are.
