Breastfeeding mom screamed for help as baby choked and turned blue at Walmart. Cop's timely reaction saved the day
Swift actions and awareness can be life-saving in many situations. However, a mom whose five-month-old baby suddenly started choking at a Walmart hadn't expected an officer to be there to save the day. The mom, Bayley Simon, had been nursing her baby, Jameson, when he started choking. She was super panicked at the sight and screamed for help. Thankfully, an officer, Edwar Talia, could get to the family right on time to save the baby's life, per CBS Detroit. The mom was really grateful for the help she received from the officer that day.
The family was at a Detroit Walmart when the incident happened. "I was nursing him when he went blue and limp," Simon told WHAS11. "He was like a wet noodle. There was nothing there, no movement, nothing." Footage of the incident had been captured on the body cam as the officer was informed that the baby was not breathing. Customer service had alerted him about the incident as he rushed inside the store to check on the child. "I rushed in there. The doors could not open fast enough," Edwar told CBS News. He ran past aisles and customers to reach the baby at the counter with his crying mom. "I panicked. I started screaming, I needed help," the mom went on.
Although the woman knew how to administer CPR, she was so panicked that she couldn't do anything. "I noticed he went completely limp, pulled him out from under my shirt and he was blue. No pulse, nothing. I'm CPR certified and in the moment of panic, I couldn't do anything." A man had been rubbing the baby's chest when the officer reached them. The person continued holding Jameson as Edwar administered life-saving measures to him. The officer had called for help and informed the department that the baby was not breathing. Edwar continued patting the baby's back to ensure that his airways were cleared. The officer was informed that the baby was being breastfed when the incident happened.
"Come on, it's okay. You got it, baby," the officer repeated as he tried to get the baby to breathe again. Soon enough, Edwar could feel that the baby had started breathing. He got the "hiccups" after that and had gotten stable enough. The grateful mom thanked the officer repeatedly as he held the baby close. "I kneeled down, I started doing just a few back blows while I'm talking to him. I can feel him breathing, but it's very agonal. Very shallow. I'm reverting back to my CPR training that I had a recertification training for the week prior," Edwar recounted.
"As soon as he got there, he realized what was happening and he knew exactly what to do. I can't thank everyone enough. Without their quick action, my child would not be with me today," the mom expressed. "He took a deep breath and I noticed that whatever was lodged in his throat definitely dislodged. I was like in the right place at the right time and obviously, with my recertification training, the right person," Talia added. The mom was grateful that her baby had been in good health after the incident.
