Bride-to-be bought an off-the-rack wedding dress from a budget store — but the tip prompt at checkout left her speechless

She bought the dress 'as is,' making the store’s request even more baffling.

Tipping culture has become so common that it sometimes puts the burden of unreal expectations on shoppers. For one bride-to-be, that moment came while buying her wedding dress from a budget bridal shop. In a post dated August 18, 2026, one woman gearing up for her big day, who goes by u/Glitzycoldbrew on Reddit, shared her awkward interaction with a salesperson when she bought a seemingly simple dress and was left questioning the tipping culture.

The bride-to-be shared a picture of the beautiful wedding dress she bought but also mentioned the unwanted surprise that came with it. When she finalized her dress, the store expected her to pay a tip. While she was already surprised by the idea of a tip at a wedding dress shop, what really got her was the amount. She had bought an off-the-rack dress for $1,864; she was presented with tip options, with the lowest option starting at 10%, nearly $200 on top of the dress price. She said she couldn't believe the request was being made at all and felt the amount was completely unreasonable. “This cannot be considered normal,” she wrote, and said that the whole thing left her genuinely stunned.

What made it even more surprising to her was the type of purchase. She said the store was a “budget” wedding dress shop, not a high-end bridal boutique, and the dress was bought “as is” off the rack. In other words, she wasn't paying for a custom gown or some extensive alteration service. She was simply buying the dress that was already in the store. However, she shared the photo of the dress because, despite the awkward checkout experience, she was still excited about the gown itself. She later clarified that she didn't leave a tip and said she posted about it simply because she couldn't get over “the audacity” of being asked in the first place.

The unexpected tip request may have left the bride with a sour impression of the store, and research suggests she may not be alone in feeling that way. A 2026 study compared lower default tips of 10%, 15%, and 20% with higher options of 20%, 25%, and 30%. While the higher options did lead to bigger tips, they also made people feel less in control of the choice and less likely to return to the business or recommend it. The effect was even stronger when customers weren't used to being asked for a tip in that setting.

The tipping expectations left many people in the comments surprised as well. u/Niceotropic joked, "You should have negotiated a 10% discount, let alone pay a 10% tip,” while u/CrownVicBruce sarcastically pointed out how bizarre tipping requests can become, writing, “If everyone asked for tips at their jobs, maybe it'll cancel each other out.” Meanwhile, u/bellybuttonbidet said, “They just don’t want to pay their taxes in full.”
