Couple left no tip on a $65 bill after the waitress asked if they wanted separate checks — their reason left her stunned

Over the last few years, tipping has taken a crazy turn. While workers cite bizarre reasons for expecting a few extra dollars, customers are also giving absurd excuses to avoid leaving a tip. A Reddit user and server shared a post under the username u/scorpio******** explaining one such scenario. Later reported by Your Tango on November 11, 2025, the employee mentioned how a couple refused to tip her after their meal. The man shared the reason by writing it on the receipt, and it left the waitress baffled.

The bill amounted to a little over $65. When the check arrived, the couple paid the amount but left no tip. Instead, they left the receipt with a reason to defend their decision. “No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks,” he wrote. Apparently, the server asked if they wanted to pay separately because she wasn’t aware whether they were together or just on a date. She didn’t want to assume they were a couple, and therefore asked, as any employee should. In the comments section, the employee clarified that the man seemed to be in his 50s or 60s while his partner looked much younger, adding to her uncertainty.

She also mentioned that in the past, there had been situations where customers “freaked out” after a single bill was brought due to a simple assumption. To avoid such situations, servers make it a point to confirm. However, the couple took great offense to a simple inquiry. Fellow Reddit users mocked the man for his unnecessary complaint. u/pigtailrose2 said, “‘Haha, no, we're married, one check is fine.’ Is that really so hard? Talk about having an ego.”

u/Shoddy_North5961 suggested, “Looking for any excuse to not tip.” u/CarefulRisk sarcastically wrote, “It's your fault for not understanding the intricacies of his relationship with his wife. He's the main character after all.” Gratuity is given based on a worker’s service, not any other factor. However, some diners get personal when it comes to leaving a few dollars as a token of appreciation.

A server can provide excellent service and still walk away without a tip for reasons beyond their control. In another story, Mishel Grebenchikova, a bartender, was serving two women when they asked her if she thought she was pretty. The employee honestly admitted she has days when her confidence is low, and she doesn’t always feel that way. For the rest of the evening, they kept looking at her, as if they were talking about her.

The two women continued their conversation, revealing the intent behind their question after the check arrived. They paid for the drinks and left no tip, claiming that she likely already received generous gratuities from other customers because she is pretty. While they tried to brush it off as a compliment, the bartender saw right through their behavior. Since she was forced to be polite, she chose not to escalate the situation, but it definitely became an experience to remember.
