Churchgoer was told to dress more ‘appropriately’ despite modest clothes — her outfit to ‘impress Jesus’ shut the critic down
Dress codes, especially in places tied to tradition, are often left unspoken yet quietly enforced. But once in a while, someone else’s idea of what’s “appropriate” ends up being imposed on you. The same happened to a Reddit user who goes by @u/CandleGleam, who was asked to dress more "church-like" during one of her visits by an elderly woman. On July 16, 2025, she posted on Reddit that while she didn't quite understand what was "inappropriate" about her outfit, she decided to respond in a way that would leave the critic speechless.
Dress more appropriately for church. Sure, I’ll follow the rule literally

To give more context to the story, the user mentioned she was wearing a long navy skirt paired with a tucked-in blouse and flats. That was when the elderly lady pointed out that while her attire might not be okay, it was not very "holy." "Maybe think about what you’d wear if Jesus were sitting in the front row," she recalled the older lady saying. The woman didn't take it as an insult and held back her response because she had "bigger plans." Taking the advice, she arrived dressed in a full-length choir robe as if she were about to preach. "White gloves. A wide-brimmed hat with a fake bird and a little veil. Bible in hand, stockings, low heels, and pearls," she continued describing her outfit.
The idea of what is considered “appropriate” in a religious context has always been interpreted in different ways. However, in this case, the most literal version made the point clearly enough. The storyteller's entry to the church was too baffling for anyone to even ask a logical question. Some did wonder whether she joined the church choir or was in a play. Yes, her outfit was that elaborate.
But the best reaction came from the elderly lady who advised in the first place. All she gave her was a stunned little nod, and said she looked reverent. Many in the comment section were reminding how churches are supposed to be a non-judgmental space. @ennichan questioned, "Why do people think that God/Jesus would be judgmental? Wouldn't they be the most forgiving?"
But the real humor came from people offering their own take on what “if Jesus were sitting in the front row” should look like. For example, @Writerhowell said, "I'd be too busy fangirling, to be honest. And also hoping he actually understands English, because I don't speak ancient Hebrew," and @dewittless commented, "Do they think God only watches you in church? I thought the whole point was omnipotence." The user eventually continued wearing her usual attire, and the critic didn't say anything since then. She respected the advice in her own way, and in return, the elderly woman seemed to respect the effort by not raising the issue again.
