The mystery ultimately traced back to an accidental interaction with Alexa. It turns out, before leaving the house, Walder and her family had given the smart speaker a voice command, but Alexa apparently misunderstood and interpreted it as a request to leave a voicemail or record a message. The device then played Jennifer's voice loudly through the home's speakers. Upon hearing what sounded like his owner's voice suddenly echoing around the house, the family's puppy reacted immediately. So, the voicemail ended up recording the dog's emotional response, which was a mix of barking, whining, and howling that sounded far more dramatic without the context behind it.
Jennifer also admitted that she stopped listening to the voicemail almost immediately because she feared the sounds might belong to a dog in genuine distress. Without context, the recording was unsettling enough to make her worry that something terrible had happened. After texting her husband, however, he suggested that the noises sounded suspiciously familiar and might actually be coming from their own dog. That observation prompted Jennifer to review footage from the family's pet cameras, ultimately revealing the surprisingly wholesome explanation.
