Customer asks mom to turn down her child’s loud tablet at a tire shop — what she does next gets them sent outside for 35 minutes instead
A simple request can turn into a frustrating ordeal when you are dealing with an entitled person. Something similar happened to a customer waiting at a tire shop when a child nearby was playing a game on a tablet at full volume. The customer, who posts on Reddit as u/starlit-shimmerx, shared the experience on October 3, 2026. After sitting through the noise for about 40 minutes and developing a headache, the customer politely asked the boy’s mother if she could turn the volume down. Instead, she brushed off the request, and what happened next ultimately left the customer waiting outside the shop for 35 minutes.
The customer said the child had been running laps around the small waiting area while playing a game filled with constant notification sounds. After 40 minutes, they finally asked the mother, as politely as possible, if she could turn the volume down because they had a headache. Her response caught them off guard. She simply replied, "He’s 6," and ignored the request to turn down the volume. The customer put in their earbuds and decided to let it go. About 20 minutes later, however, the service manager approached them and said the woman had complained that they had been staring at her son and had "spoken to her in a way that made her uncomfortable." The manager seemed apologetic but still asked the customer to wait outside until their car was ready.
The customer said they spent the next 35 minutes standing outside in the parking lot while waiting for the tire work to be finished. Their car was finally ready at 11:40, and when they went back inside to pay, the woman and her child were still in the waiting area. The situation left them frustrated, especially since they had tried to avoid making an issue of the noise in the first place. What made the whole thing more awkward was that no one else in the waiting room had complained about the kid's disruption. One older man repeatedly glanced toward the mother and child, while another customer moved to the chair farthest away from them. Still, the customer was the one to end up outside after the woman said their interaction made her uncomfortable.
People in the comments were as shocked as the customer by the unexpected turn of events. u/Several-Honey-8810 put it simply, writing, "He’s 6 is not an excuse." Meanwhile, u/thePRMenace joked, "‘He’s 6.’ Ok, but is he deaf? "Would you mind waiting outside until your car is ready?" Yes, I would." u/SleepyKoalaBear4812 asked, "Why didn’t you tell them what actually happened and insist he deal with that?"
A parent’s response to a child’s disruptive behavior can change the situation a lot. In a similar situation on a flight, a passenger had to put up with a child screaming for hours while also playing loud music from an iPad. The passenger said the parents made little effort to calm the child or lower the noise. They eventually asked a flight attendant to step in. But instead of taking responsibility, the parents said, "We can't do anything to control him, so we just have to let him scream and play." The incident, much like the tire-shop story, had the parent expecting everyone around them to tolerate disruptive behavior simply because a child was involved.
