They were embarrassed and quickly looked for alternatives, only to see that the cashier was already bagging all their items.

The embarrassment of being unable to pay while it's your turn at the checkout line is real. Meeting angry gazes from impatient customers can make the situation even more stressful. One shopper felt the same when they went to Costco in La Mesa. Sharing the experience on Reddit under the username u/No-Adhesiveness3246, on October 21, 2026, they mentioned that an issue with their bank card wouldn’t let them pay while checking out. They stepped aside to see if they could fix the problem or find an alternative, but in vain. To their surprise, the cashier then started bagging their items, and what followed left them speechless.

The shopper mentioned that a few weeks earlier, they had experienced some fraudulent activity involving their card. It had since been settled with the bank, but they had also been sent a replacement card without their knowledge. As a result, their existing one wouldn’t work. They stepped out of line and frantically began looking for other ways to pay, even checking if there was an ATM nearby. They then realized the cashier was scanning and bagging the items. Fearing it was a miscommunication or that the employee was running out of patience, they “looked at them bewildered and apologized.” Instead of fuming, the worker handed them a receipt and said that the man behind them had paid the entire $190.

Unsure how to comprehend the situation, they were undoubtedly surprised. They mentioned that they tried chasing the person down in hopes of getting his contact information or finding a way to repay him, but he had already left by the time they had finished. Sharing a public thank-you in the hope that the good Samaritan would find it, they said, “So, thank you to the kind angel who helped me out today.” In a comment, they explained that they didn’t notice him paying because they were engrossed in trying to figure out a way to pay. Even when they glanced and saw the cashier scanning, they assumed they had missed an item or two. It was only when they were bagging the items that the shopper paid attention.

It doesn’t take a great deal to see people around in need; there are plenty of them. It does, however, take a lot of heart to step in and help. Another shopper did this in a wholesome manner, leaving a dad-daughter duo stoked. The pair happily arrived with basics like strawberries, bananas, and whipped cream, only to be told that their gift card couldn’t cover everything. They stood anxiously in the checkout area, trying to figure out what to return. That’s when a woman behind them asked the cashier if the dad had any balance left to pay, before adding that she would cover it. The duo instantly looked up at her gratefully, and the dad began thanking her profusely. According to the woman, she had just done her bit to put a smile on their faces.
