Dad explains bathroom ‘number 1’ and ‘number 2’ to his 4-year-old — then the kid invents a ‘number 3’ and leaves him floored

Instead of correcting his son, the father decided to accept the new term in their household.

When you teach kids something new, their imagination often takes it even further. One father recently shared such an experience involving a simple bathroom question and his 4-year-old son. While helping the child understand common toilet terms, the dad received an answer he never expected. The story was shared on Reddit on April 14, 2025, by the father under the username u/jmcdyre. During the exchange, the young boy came up with his own bathroom category, leaving his father completely surprised.

According to the father, the moment started when his son said he needed to use the toilet. The dad casually asked if he needed a “number 1” or a “number 2.” The child had never heard those terms before and quickly asked what they meant. The father then explained it simply, saying, “number 1 is a wee, number 2 is a poo.” Children often take new ideas seriously as they try to understand everyday things. After thinking for a few seconds, the boy said he actually needed a “number 3,” which he explained meant “when you need both.” The answer was so direct and logical that it instantly caught the father off guard.

The dad later admitted the explanation made perfect sense to him as well. Children can sometimes come up with new ideas that turn out to be surprisingly practical once understood, and that is exactly the approach the father adopted here. Instead of correcting his son, the father decided to accept the new term in their household. He later joked about how naturally it worked in daily conversations. “Logic works perfectly, now using the same term daily,” he wrote in the post.

It is never a dull moment when it comes to interacting with children. In another incident, a father of two in South Carolina had a moment at home that turned into a funny family memory. Kenzy Peake, 32, was working from home while his wife, Ashlyn, also 32, was on maternity leave after the birth of their youngest son, Benson. One afternoon, he walked into the living room and noticed his 6-year-old son Koah sitting on the couch holding the newborn. Parents often expect sweet moments between siblings, especially when a new baby arrives. Curious about the quiet scene, Kenzy picked up his phone and began recording.

Looking at the child calmly holding the baby, he asked, “What are you doing?” Koah looked up briefly and replied in a flat voice, “Your job.” Perfect case of how children sometimes deliver the most unexpected replies with complete seriousness. Instead of reacting dramatically, the boy simply turned his attention back to the television while still holding his baby brother. The confident way he answered completely surprised Kenzy. He later said he did not expect such a sharp reply from his son. “He has a dry sense of humor, just like his dad,” he explained. The father also laughed about the moment, saying it was one of those times when kids say something serious yet funny at the same time.
