Deaf woman cleaning out her late grandfather’s home found his 2005 ASL certificate — and broke down over what it meant
Sometimes, people never fully realize the quiet and beautiful things someone did for them while they were still around. It is often only after a person is gone that small discoveries suddenly bring years of love rushing back all at once. Something similar happened to deaf Instagram user Leila Hanaumi, who also goes by @hifi_deafie, while cleaning her grandfather's house after her grandad passed away four months earlier. While sorting through his belongings, she found a certificate that immediately reminded her of the quiet efforts the old man had made for her. She shared the heartwarming story on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
Hanaumi explained that she had always been incredibly close to her grandmother growing up because her grandma was already fluent in ASL. She had learned the sign language for her deaf son, who was born with hearing loss caused by Rubella disease. Her grandmother also became the bridge that allowed the family to communicate naturally. But everything changed after she passed away when Hanaumi was 13 years old. Suddenly, her grandfather had not only lost his wife, but also the family’s translator. Instead of accepting that distance, he quietly learned ASL to connect with his family, and that ASL completion certificate from 2005 was what Hanaumi discovered when cleaning the house.
Hanaumi admitted that, during her childhood, her grandfather had always felt more like a stranger she lived around than someone she truly knew. They never really shared much of a connection growing up, largely because communication between them felt limited. But after he completed a 200-hour ASL course in his 60s, everything slowly changed. For the first time, they built the kind of grandfather-granddaughter relationship she had missed for years. She explained that some of her closest memories with him came later during high school, college, and especially adulthood, which ultimately became a huge part of the second half of her life.
Reflecting on it now, she said her grandfather proved something she wishes more people understood: it is never too late to learn. The story also brought many viewers to tears. @seanforbes remarked, "So precious! What a beautiful story. I immediately thought of your grandparents reconnecting and your grandpa signing something to your grandma." @freeyourinhibitions commented, "He had to do this to have a relationship. His love and desire for a relationship were so strong that he made a change." @uriel.xsf wrote, "I’m so emotional right now! I wish most of my family would learn ASL for me as he did. He was a hero, a good man, and he would do anything for the people he loves!"
Hanaumi explained that during that era, it was actually common for fathers and grandfathers not to learn ASL themselves because communication often went through the mother instead, which is exactly why her grandfather’s decision meant so much more to her. Nobody expected him to learn, and nobody forced him to do it. He simply chose to make the effort because he wanted a relationship with his family.
