Disabled landlord's heart sank when her tenant texted, fearing another expensive repair — his actual message left her deeply touched
Landlord-tenant relationships can often be tense or even negative. In many cases, both sides fail to acknowledge that behind the titles, there are human beings. A 44-year-old woman who goes by u/about_bruno shared a wholesome story about her tenant. In her post on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, she mentioned how she instantly feared she would have to shell out money for repairs after seeing a notification from the man. To her surprise, what he said instead left her smiling.
The woman mentioned that she is disabled and rents out her basement for extra income. The guy who moved in seemed nice, so she referred to him as a roommate rather than a tenant. Yet, they never spoke much, and his texts were often about repairs, tenant-related queries, and work. That’s why, when his name popped up on the screen, her "heart sank," and her immediate thought was that she would have to pay for expensive repairs. When she opened the text, she realized he was telling her that he had helped with the Halloween decorations she had been struggling with the day before.

As he returned from work, he noticed she was trying to put up an inflatable in her front yard but couldn’t do so because there was no power on the front porch. After sharing the situation with him, he joked about how he expected the decorations to be in place on time. The next day, he messaged her, letting her know that he had checked the power issue, gone to the garage, reset the systems, and gotten the lights back on. The landlord noted that he never even used the garage and the basement, which was functioning perfectly well, was the only space he paid to use. Yet, he realized that she was in need of help, and even though it was something for her to figure out, he stepped in.

Reddit users were moved by his simple act and thoughtfulness. u/Crickwooder13 wrote, “People who care make such a difference in life.” u/CarefururLuv1 added, “I absolutely adore my tenants that appreciate my house as their home. It makes life so pleasant.” u/mamallamam0118 remarked, “Awesome roommate/tenant! Make him some Halloween cookies!”

Having tenants and landlords who treat each other with respect and decency can make a shared living arrangement more comfortable and supportive. Beyond the rules, agreements, and payments, recognizing each other as individuals can create a more meaningful relationship. One homeowner decided to extend kindness to a mom who rented his place during COVID. He knew she was struggling to make ends meet and waived her rent for a month.
He even called to check up on her and asked if she and her kids had everything they needed. She casually mentioned that she was running low on food and would be making a grocery trip soon. To her surprise, she later received a text from the landlord, asking her to check her porch. There, she saw 16 bags of groceries filled with milk, veggies, diapers, and everything she needed. “I couldn’t tell you how I feel right now. For him to do this for my family, my heart is so touched,” she remarked.
