Quite often, we hear stories of women being shamed for breastfeeding in public. But rarely do we hear stories of fiery moms giving it back. A Reddit user who goes by u/Neat_Laugh70 was breastfeeding her baby at a grocery store when an elderly woman stormed over to shame her for not covering up. However, the mother's wild "cover-up" solution made the elderly woman run away. Sharing the hilarious story on Reddit on May 3, 2025, the mother revealed what triggered her to act so quickly.

The woman behind the post was at a grocery store when her youngest baby began to get hungry. So she immediately latched him to her breast to feed him. While she assumed that her problem was solved once her kid got fed, she didn’t realize she would encounter a bizarre confrontation with a stranger. She revealed that an elderly woman who was shopping on the other side of the aisle stormed near her and shamed her for not covering up. "Excuse me! I can see, and it's disgusting! Cover up!" the woman said. The mother, who was triggered by the comment, decided to pull out a knitted hat that had a bare breast graphic picture on it and put it over the baby's head and said, "Is it better?"

The mother revealed that while she was breastfeeding, her areola was covered, and all that was visible was the skin of her breast. "Like what you would see in a shirt, for example," she wrote. She noted that soon after she pulled the hat and brought the wild solution, the elderly woman quickly exited the area. "I've never seen someone run so fast," she added. The Reddit user's post gained massive traction and led to many users reacting.

One of my very best memories is nervously sitting on a bus bench, having finally gotten the hang of breastfeeding with my first, and an older woman crossed the street just to tell me 'Good job! Feed him wherever you are! That's excellent!'" u/Super_Reading2048 noted, "First, women are bad moms for using formula. Now, women are bad moms for breastfeeding in public. Society needs to make up its damn mind."

u/FactDisastrous remarked, "Too perfect! Worked at a restaurant years ago where a customer was breastfeeding her child. Another customer told her to think of the other patrons and cover up, so this woman pulls out a giant scarf and drapes it over her own head." This story story reminds us of a young mother named Melanie Dudley, who was asked to "cover up" in hot weather while she was breastfeeding her baby. When Dudley was vacationing and breastfeeding her baby in high temperatures, she removed her shirt to stay cool. However, when she was approached by a stranger asking her to cover up, she took a nursing cover and put it over her head to "cover up." Dudley's sassy response instantly silenced the stranger.
