Employee found his Brazilian coworker crying in a closet after a surprise birthday cake — what the man said made him reflect on his own privilege
A birthday celebration doesn't have to be grand to make someone feel important. What matters is knowing that someone thought of them. Dante, who goes by @d.nero_als on TikTok, shared a touching story on October 24, 2026, about a coworker whose birthday took an unexpected emotional turn. Dante's coworker was from Brazil and lived alone, far from his family, and had little access to technology. Since he had no one to celebrate his birthday with, the employees surprised him with a cake. However, when Dante found him crying in a closet later, what he said left Dante grateful for what he has.

When the coworker's birthday came around, the team surprised him with a carnival cake through DoorDash. The man was thrilled, clapping and thanking them. But after a while, Dante heard sniffles near a closet and found him crying. After handing him a roll of paper towels, Dante asked if he was okay. He replied that they were happy tears and said, "I haven't received a birthday cake in so long," adding that "it feels good to be celebrated." Dante was moved, realizing that something he had always taken for granted could mean so much to someone else.

Dante said the experience changed how he looked at birthdays. He had always grown up with family members making a fuss over his special day, so he hadn't considered that some people might go years without that kind of celebration. Seeing his coworker so emotional reminded him that even a small gesture can make someone feel seen and appreciated.

The story prompted reactions from TikTok users, many of whom shared how seriously they take celebrating the people around them. @adoredbyme7 commented, "I don’t play about nobody's birthday because you just never know!" @valenciaspears said, "Birthdays can make you think about a lot of things." @sunny.deeeeeee wrote, "I get every coworker a cake with my own money. I don't play about birthdays; people are lonely."

There's no harm in making the people around you feel special. You never know what someone might be going through or how lonely they might feel. Feeling seen and appreciated is a basic human need, and for someone who rarely gets that feeling, even a small surprise can mean the world. A similar story involved 8-year-old Angel David from Colombia, who had never had a birthday party because his family couldn't afford one.
After learning that he dreamed of having a celebration, his teacher and classmates teamed up to surprise him with a party at school. When David walked into the classroom and saw everyone singing for him, he was overwhelmed with emotion. He later said he was so happy that he started crying. Like Dante's coworker, David's reaction showed how much it can mean to feel remembered and celebrated.
