A single excuse can change the course of an uncomfortable situation in ways no one expects. While in college, Instagram user Ashley went on a movie date with an older man, but she was looking for an excuse to get out of there. She claimed she had forgotten about a friend's birthday party and needed to leave, believing it was the quickest way out. After returning safely to her dorm, one message from the man asking about the party created a fresh problem that she had not seen coming. In an Instagram post shared on Monday, June 29, 2026, under the handle @plantingashley, Ashley recalled how an unexpected moment in the next dorm room gave her the proof she desperately needed without revealing her lie.

While thinking of a way to respond to the man, Ashley walked through her dorm lobby, turned left, and knocked on the first door she saw. She found nine girls celebrating a birthday party. She then quickly explained her situation and asked if they would take a few photos with her alongside the cake and balloons. The strangers agreed without hesitation, helping her create the evidence she needed. Ashley then sent the pictures to the man, who replied that the party looked fun.

After that exchange, she never spoke to him again, and she never met the girls who helped her that night. But the way those girls helped her without hesitation left a lasting impression on her. Ashley later explained in the comments that she was "newly 18" while the man was "26/27." She said they had met online, and she accepted a ride from him to their date. But once she got into his car, she realized how dangerous the situation could become. She wrote that she "got terrified" because she understood he "could take me anywhere."

She waited until they stepped out of the car before calling her friend to pick her up, saying that was the safest moment she could think of to leave. Looking back at difficult experiences can encourage wiser decisions in the future. In the caption, Ashley thanked the strangers by writing, "Those girls were a godsend," but she also admitted, "In hindsight, I wish I had just been honest with him."

College dating stories can be fun, but not every date goes as expected. In another incident, a college freshman shared an unforgettable first date that immediately turned uncomfortable. She matched with a man through a dating app, and he planned a surprise outing that included an off-road drive and a picnic in the mountains. As the evening went on, his behavior made her increasingly uneasy.

She admitted, “I was a little bit nervous,” after he drove recklessly on rough roads. Later, he confessed that he believed his biggest flaw was being too cocky and even described a daily routine with his roommate where they compared their looks. He then said, “Some people aren’t blessed to be as attractive as you and I are.” That strange confession convinced her to end the date and refuse another meeting.
