Some customers demand exceptional service but do not reflect that in their tipping. Bartender Sameer Kode shared a recent story about serving a man who ordered difficult cocktails during rush hour while changing ingredients and asking for special treatment. The customer also reminded staff that he had once worked in restaurants, but the long interaction ended with only a small $3 tip. Kode described the incident in a Threads post shared on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, under the handle @sameerkode, where the tense exchange took an unexpected turn after he delivered one cold remark.

Kode explained that the customer ordered three cocktails and adjusted nearly every part of the drinks while the bar was already overwhelmed with orders. He said the man also kept repeating, “I used to work in the industry, bro,” as if the comment should excuse the extra effort and delays during the busy shift. After the customer paid a $220 bill and left three dollars as a tip, Kode pushed the check back and said, “If you worked in restaurants, then you probably forgot a number.” According to Kode, the customer looked shocked and stopped arguing after hearing the response from him.

Kode explained that the customer’s requests forced him to move around the bar repeatedly while trying to handle many other waiting orders at the same time. He said the man acted like a VIP customer and expected constant attention despite the crowded environment. The bartender shared the story online because he felt that some customers used their past industry experience as an excuse to demand extra service without considering the pressure workers already face. He commented, "Stop acting like being in the industry means bartenders owe you free labor."

The incident later became part of a wider conversation about tipping culture and customer behavior in restaurants. Many people felt the customer should have understood the pressure better after repeatedly mentioning his own restaurant experience. Meanwhile, others shared their anecdotes in the comments section. @lisareidisback remarked, "If he really worked in the industry, he wouldn’t have done that to you during a rush."

@petlobster pointed out, "Don't ask for modifications if you don't plan on tipping... If you're asking the bartender to go above and beyond, you should be tipping accordingly." @cheshirecat0712 mentioned, "I worked in the industry a long time ago and never forget to leave a nice tip." @double_bravo84 said, "If anything, because I was in the industry at one point, I try to make things easier."

While some guests may be stingy with their tips, another man recently showed how an act of generosity can leave a lasting impression on service workers. A bartender was shocked after discovering a customer had left a $16,000 tip on a small meal bill. The man casually joked, “Don’t spend it all in one place,” before leaving. When the bartender questioned the amount, he simply replied, “No, I want you to have this.” The money was later shared among several bartenders, and part of it was also given to kitchen staff working that day.
