Family dismissed teen's severe swelling and 104-degree fever after wisdom tooth removal — a week later, her surgeon took one look at her
Even minor procedures require observation for the next few hours to avoid complications. A woman named Danielle Catherine, who goes by @sofriggencoolx on Threads, shared a post on October 14, 2026, recalling how she learned this the hard way. During her late teens, she had a wisdom tooth extraction procedure, after which she started experiencing unusual symptoms. When she told her family, they brushed it off, saying she likely misunderstood and that whatever she was feeling would soon stop. After a week of persistent symptoms, things got worse, prompting an urgent visit to the doctor.
The nurse had told Catherine’s mom to expect some swelling following the procedure. However, when it became significantly swollen, the young woman decided to check if it was still normal. She even got a 104-degree fever, but her family brushed it off, saying she likely read it wrong. For the next week, the swelling kept increasing, but no one considered it problematic. After struggling for a week, she developed an abscess and had no option but to see the doctor. She went back to the same surgeon who had performed the procedure on her. When she arrived at the clinic, she was ushered ahead because her condition looked scary and worrisome. Finally, the surgeon explained that she had developed an infection.

They had to drain the abscess, a procedure which was unbearably painful even after being put under laughing gas. Catherine later learned that what happened to her was a rare case, which even the surgeon had not expected. He mentioned that only 1 percent of cases resulted in such severe complications. Looking back, the woman still recalls every bit of that pain and fever. She even joked that things could have turned out differently had she not visited the doctor later. Side effects and complications are unexpected but can happen to anyone, irrespective of age, health, or how simple the procedure might be. It is crucial to be observant and get any unusual symptoms checked by a doctor.

In another instance, a man ignored flu-like symptoms following a dental procedure, and later had to be rushed to the ER. He had visited the clinic for a routine checkup because his gums were inflamed and bleeding. After this, he went home, but later the same day, he started feeling sick. At first, it felt like he had the flu, and so he didn’t bother for the next 45 hours. Instead of symptoms subsiding, they got worse, to the point where he was shaking. That’s when he decided to drive to the ER, but unfortunately, he went into septic shock. The infection from his gums likely entered his blood, and the wait caused more damage. He had to have his arms and legs amputated. The ignorance took a serious toll on his life, becoming a horrifying reminder to not dismiss even the slightest things that feel off when it comes to health.
