Female officer was called about a starving newborn abandoned in a sewer drain — what she did next 'without thinking twice' made moms everywhere proud
Leaving a newborn behind puts a fragile life at immediate risk. When a newborn was found starving in a drain, the baby could not have known that an angel in the form of a female military officer would step in and offer the care she desperately needed. Her act has since received widespread appreciation online. On February 19, 2026, the baby was allegedly abandoned by a couple who were seen arguing in the middle of the road in the city of Ibirité. Reported by PEOPLE on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Brazil's Military Police honored the officer for her act of kindness and for saving a life.
According to the Daily Star, security footage showed the mother placing the baby in a sewer drain. A passerby noticed the child and contacted the staff at a local medical center. Doctors discovered that the baby girl was severely dehydrated and hungry, showing signs of sun exposure, a possible urinary tract infection, and trauma to her genital region. When the doctors advised that there was no formula available and the baby needed emergency breastfeeding, female military officer Helen Valerio stepped in to breastfeed the baby herself! The officer, who had recently become a mother, was still lactating.
According to the Instagram post updated by Brazil’s Military Police, Valerio revealed that she did not hesitate before acting. "She was covered in dirt and very hungry. As a mother, I didn’t think twice. I only wanted to help her." Her actions earned her praise from the force, which honored her for her compassion and courage. As per reports, the child's parents are aged 22. While the mother was charged with child abuse and abandonment of a minor, the father was taken into custody and charged with child abuse. The infant received medical care and was later placed in a shelter, while authorities continue to investigate the case.

The incident took place in 1993, when the baby's family began panicking after finding her struggling to breathe. However, Barca quickly jumped in to perform CPR and took the baby to the hospital, where her heart began beating again. However, the story does not end there. Twenty years later, the baby who grew up into a beautiful bride invited Barca to be her guest of honor at her wedding in 2014. "He's like a second father. He's not just a friend or a hero. He's family," she said.
