Service and emergency workers go way beyond the call of duty at times. A group of firefighters did just that when they saw a 95-year-old man mowing his lawn as they were passing by the house. They decided to turn around, stop by and do something heartwarming. The video of the incident was shared by the Austin Fire Department on X, where they go by @austinfiredept. It received more than 47,600 views. The kind surprise left the internet in awe of the department's work for people.

A 95-year-old man was struggling to mow his lawn when a firefighter crew was passing by. They noticed the man's plight and stopped to offer help in mowing the lawn. In the video, it could be seen that one of the firefighters was mowing each part of the man's lawn carefully as the old man stood there. The two other firefighters kept the man company as their colleague worked on the man's sloping lawn visible from the road. "Our E6/C-shift crew passed this house yesterday and saw the 95YO resident struggling to mow his lawn. They stopped the unit to give him a hand; firefighter Rivas made quick work of the hilly front yard," the caption to the post read.

The department applauded the firefighters for doing something beyond the scope of their work. "Kudos to them for serving those in need, no matter what that need may be!" the caption continued. Addressing the unmet needs of the elderly population has become one of the biggest public health priorities, per BMC Geriatrics. The number of old people with unmet needs has significantly increased due to the problems in the formal and informal care system in the UK, according to the study. The three major areas in these unmet needs are social activities and relationships, mental health and mobility, self-care and domestic needs. Understanding these needs is an important first step to addressing them, per the outlet. Many people appreciated the fire department for going above and beyond to help an old man in need.

@tunoroppity wrote, "Beautiful! Just think. They could’ve just waited until they were called to his place over a cardiac arrest or a life-threatening injury. Instead, a lawn got mowed, an old guy had company, an FD guy got some great exercise, & another had a great conversation with a 95-year-old man." @drummike2012 commented, "Firefighters rock! If the rest of our public servants took public service as seriously as you do, the world would be a better place." @PattyGr64229258 remarked, "When you’re not saving lives and property, you’re saving someone’s pride and dignity. Thank you."

@jeffpike52 shared, "As a retired Austin Fire Captain, who at one time was a Lt. on Engine 6C, I'm proud of that crew for helping out this elderly citizen. Kudos, brothers!" @LongHornsBlow expressed, "In my hands, a lawn mower is just a tool, in the hands of some people, we’ll say a Rivas, that lawn mower makes art." @LibbyZink pointed out, "Thank you so much for helping a citizen in need; it means the world in these extremely trying times." @chucklehead57 said, "That’s what firefighters do, it’s in their nature. Proud to see this!"
