First responders took her husband to hospital after heart attack — then returned with more men for a reason that stunned her

It was confusing to see the first responders return, but when the family learned why, they had a newfound respect for the responders.

Sometimes, helping a person can be a part of another’s duty. However, other times, it requires one to go above and beyond their duty. A woman from Florida named Melissa Ann Work revealed that when her husband suffered a heart attack in 2018, the first responders arrived in time to help him get to the hospital. However, she was awestruck when she learned why they returned with firefighters even after taking her husband to the hospital. It turned out that the men were going above and beyond their duty for a selflessly thoughtful reason. Ann Work mentioned that her husband and brother-in-law were working outdoors when the husband suffered a heart attack.

Ann Work went to the hospital to be with her husband while her brother-in-law waited back in their home. The next day, he “heard huge trucks driving back down the road.” On further investigation, he realized there were fire and ambulance trucks. “He was confused and thought they were coming to check on him,” Ann Work explained. “Before he knew it, 7 firefighters and EMTs jumped out and put on gloves,” she added. To his surprise, the first responders returned to help him with something the husband had started and needed to finish — laying down a new sod. Before having his attack, the husband and brother-in-law had been working on laying up a new sod.

“We had just received our last 4 palettes and were going to finish it. It's been my husband's biggest stress as our HOA (Home Owner’s Association) date to fine us a huge amount was getting closer,” she explained. According to Green Pal, adhering to rules set forth by HOAs is crucial. Delaying can lead to hefty fines and worse repercussions, such as denying access to common areas, prosecution and more. “While he was having his heart attack, literally in and out of consciousness, he kept begging me to figure out the sod and have it put down. It’s all he kept asking about literally during a massive heart attack,” Ann Work remarked.

“I calmed him and kept saying, ‘Jesus will help us. It’s okay. Jesus will figure this out, babe,’” she added. The brother-in-law had stayed to finish the sod work so the family wouldn’t land in trouble. On the day of the incident, the brother-in-law got back to work to complete as much as possible. He removed the old grass and began laying the new one. The next day, help arrived most unexpectedly. “They knew he wouldn’t be able to do any work for weeks, so they came back. They came back! They saved his life, dropped him off and then cared enough to save our grass!” Ann Work exclaimed.

She further revealed that their family had made many sacrifices to afford the sod and were also dealing with other health struggles. Despite the first responders having no idea of any of it, including the fine, they just wanted to help. “They didn't know all we have been through as a little family. They simply saw someone in need and did this for us. We have no words. Just sobbing,” Ann Work said.
