German woman in Paris asked a stranger for directions with just minutes to catch her train — instead of pointing the way, he did something unexpected
Strangers may ask for help with simple things like directions or travel queries. We have the power to directly offer that assistance or take things up a notch with some kindness. A Reddit user who goes by u/avocado_yumyumyum shared a post on August 25, 2026, revealing how one gentleman chose the latter. The German woman was traveling in Paris and was confused about how to get from Gare du Nord to Gare de l’Est to catch her train. She decided to ask someone how to get there, and instead of telling her the route, the stranger did something unexpected.
To the stranger in the Schweinsteiger shirt who ran with me from Gare du Nord to Gare de l’Est today: THANK YOU ❤️

The woman was on a business trip and was already running late. She had used an app to track her train details, but some error left her jumping from one spot to another to find the right train. She somehow made it to the Gare du Nord station, but her train was to be taken from Gare de l’Est. She had only 10 minutes to get there and decided to ask a stranger for help. “I couldn't even figure out how to get out of Gare du Nord,” she recalled. When she asked him for directions, instead of pointing her towards the exit, he ran with her all the way to her station so she could get her train in time. “It was hot, he presumably had somewhere else to be, and he had absolutely no reason to spend his time sprinting through Paris with a panicking German stranger, but he did,” she remarked. She pointed out that it was only because of his thoughtfulness that she made it to her train in time.
Because she didn’t know his name, she decided to leave a thank you in her post for him. “You were wearing a German football shirt with Schweinsteiger on the back,” she noted, adding that she will always remain grateful for his kindness and will do her best to pass it on to others. Users were glad to hear such a heartwarming story, and shared their own experiences too. u/SurlyChisholm said, “I'd heard that rumor that people were rude in Paris, but I only met the most wonderful people.” u/ariastark96 added, “I'm impressed; the stations are near, but making it in 10 minutes is not easy.” u/Sharinganseesyou remarked, “Proof the world can be kind.”
Any tourist’s experience becomes even more priceless when they experience a sense of belonging through the warmth of the locals. And this can be done through the littlest gestures. In a similar instance, an American woman named Audrey received kindness from a stranger in Greece for a simple and beautiful reason. At the airport, she noticed her suitcase was damaged during transit. As she struggled to put it together, an older gentleman appeared and offered to help. He used tape and glue from his car to fix the bag. As she watched him patiently assist her, she asked whether he had daughters. He revealed he had two. “I knew it,” she remarked, explaining that his gentleness matched that of a thoughtful dad. It was a simple exchange, but one that stayed in the duo’s hearts for a long time.
