He refused to tip the cart girl after she wouldn't give him her number. Her reply about his wife left him embarrassed in front of his friends

The married golfer tried flirting instead of tipping, and her response put him in his place.

For service workers, a tip is often a sign that their effort was appreciated. But for one cart attendant, a missing tip turned out to be the least uncomfortable part of the interaction. In a video posted on January 17, 2026, Instagram user Cass Holland, who goes by @americandreamhoney, shared how a routine stop to serve drinks to four golfers quickly turned into an awkward exchange after one member of the group crossed the line.

Holland explained that the golfers split into pairs, with two men paying for the first round of beers and shots while the others picked out the drinks. Since no one tipped, she assumed someone in the group would make up for it later. Instead, when the second pair paid for the next round, one of the golfers asked for her phone number. After she turned him down, he insisted she'd change her mind if she saw his house. Holland replied that if he was trying to impress her, he should've left a tip. When the man said she shouldn't expect one, she gave him a spot-on response he never expected: "Well, you shouldn't expect me not to tell your wife, who comes into our restaurant, that you were harassing me."

While some viewers focused on the tipping culture, others said the man's behavior was far more off-putting. @t.saphir17 wrote, "Expecting tips for literally doing the job you have been paid to do. On the other hand, you shouldn’t have to put up with sleazy guys trying to hit on you." @renecharles_ commented, "You ain’t wrong at all. Tell his wife." @azcolth added, "I never understood hitting on the cart girl or the bartender. Be nice, tip well, maybe you get a free beer."

Using a tip to make a point isn't uncommon in customer service, but it doesn't always go the way customers expect. In another story, a Reddit user shared how a diner spent an entire birthday meal complaining that his mojito didn't come with a salt rim, even after refusing the server's offer to fix it. After repeatedly bringing up the issue, the customer left just over a $1 tip on a $118 bill. Instead of accepting what they saw as an insult, the server returned the money and insisted the customer take it back, leaving him so embarrassed that he asked to speak to the manager.

Holland's experience also highlights a common problem many restaurant workers face. A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that workers who rely on tips are more likely to experience sexual harassment from customers. Researchers said the expectation to stay friendly and earn tips can make some customers feel they have more power, leading to unwanted comments, flirting, and other inappropriate behavior.
