He spent their first date boasting about money and credit scores — then one question when the bill arrived made her pay her share and walk out
Sometimes, you can tell a date is going badly long before the check arrives. For Les, a TikTok creator, a date that started with a man repeatedly asking her out quickly turned into a conversation about money, cars, and credit scores. On August 22, 2026, she shared the story on her handle @caldo.de.les, explaining how one question he asked about their bill was enough to make her grab her purse, pay her share, and walk out.
Les said the man had been texting her repeatedly for a while, asking her to go out with him, so she finally agreed to meet him at Texas Roadhouse. But things started feeling strange almost immediately. One of the first things he asked was what she thought everyone’s credit scores were in the restaurant, and from there, the conversation kept circling back to money. He told her he wanted to become a millionaire within a year, asked what kind of car she drove, and even commented on her 2023 Toyota Camry. But things got even more uncomfortable when he asked what she could "offer" him in exchange for paying for their food. That was the moment she decided she had heard enough. She replied, "I have nothing of value to offer you; I’m not sleeping with you," paid for her share of the food, left, and later blocked him.
Les said the conversation had already been getting on her nerves. He kept comparing her nursing salary to what other people make and told her she should be grateful because nurses automatically make more than most people. Then, despite choosing Texas Roadhouse himself, he said he had picked it because he thought it was somewhere "in your budget." Les said she was completely confused by the mixed messages.
By then, she was already looking for a way out. When he got up to use the bathroom after asking what she could "offer" him in exchange for the food, Les grabbed her purse and went straight to the waitress. The waitress had apparently noticed the awkwardness too. When Les said she was leaving, the waitress laughed and told her she had been waiting to see whether she would "stick it out." Les offered to pay the entire bill, but the waitress only charged her for her Dr Pepper and the shared appetizer.
After blocking the man, Les headed to Nordstrom Rack and found a pair of cute boots. But the date left her wondering why he had assumed she needed him to pay for a $17 meal. She pointed out that she had already spent hundreds of dollars that day on her car registration and nursing credentials, plus another $800 on back-to-school shopping for her son. She had also paid for gas, a pedicure, and coffee.
"So you think that I’m putting on makeup and getting ready and doing all of these cutesy girly things because I need you to pay for my $17 Texas Roadhouse order?" she said. By the end of the story, Les said she was done with dating for now and would rather pay for her own things than deal with another date like this. The comments were quick to agree with her decision.
