He spilled water on his date and said 'it’s just water' instead of apologizing. He then tried to dodge the check but she waited
Small moments during a date can reveal a lot about how someone treats the person sitting across from them. Threads user Lissa Rodriguez witnessed an uncomfortable scenario at a restaurant while having dinner with her husband and later shared the story on her account @lissarodrgz on Monday, August 17, 2026. A man at the table behind them accidentally spilled a glass full of ice water over his date, soaking her jeans. Instead of saying sorry, he acted as though the spill was nothing serious, but the woman later made her feelings clear when the check arrived.
The man casually told her, "Ehh, it’s just water!" after completely soaking her clothes. He then asked her if she felt "cooled off" and pointed out that at least the drink was not sticky like soda. The woman stayed at the table despite being drenched. Later, the waitress asked whether they wanted to split the check down the middle, and she immediately said yes. Her date went to the bathroom, took what felt like forever, according to Lissa, and when he returned, he seemed surprised to see his share of the bill still waiting for him. He looked at the check and said, "Oh, this is here,” while she answered, "Yup." She made it clear she was not interested in him and was in no way going to let him get away without paying his bit.
Lissa also mentioned how the woman remained calm throughout the conversation. At one point, the man attempted to ask for her number, and even said he would plan another date, but she appeared disinterested. She paid her share, and while her date was still waiting for the server to collect his card, she left the restaurant. By the time Lissa and her husband were leaving, the guy was still sitting at the table with his card and a wet towel across from him. She joked that he might be sitting with his thoughts, trying to "figure out where it went wrong."
Lack of respect during a date can instantly guarantee it is not going to end well. It's one of the dealbreakers for many. In another story, a man commented on his date's looks, in the hopes of praising her. He told her, “You’re pretty for a dark girl,” which she immediately saw as a clear backhanded compliment. Instead of getting angry, she calmly replied, "And you’re confident for a man with that hairline." The remark left him speechless, and she later explained that her response was meant to show him exactly how uncomfortable such statements can make a person feel.
