Her date proudly showed her a photo of his dog named after a childhood cartoon — one quick Google search exposed a 4-year identity crisis
Pet owners always have the most unique ways to name their canine and feline companions. A Reddit user was having lunch when they overheard a couple in their 20s conversing during their date. The man excitedly displayed a photo of his dog named after a childhood cartoon. However, one Google search exposed a 4-year-long mishap. Sharing on December 4, 2026, under the handle u/FastyNilthShreakyFit, it was revealed how the conversation took a hilariously embarrassing turn.
The woman was eager to see her date's dog as he showed her a picture from his phone. When she gushed about his canine companion, he revealed that he had named him "Johnny Thornberry" after a wild cartoon character he used to watch as a kid. She immediately interrupted him and asked if he was referring to the show Wild Thornberrys. When he said yes, she quietly corrected him, saying, "Yeah, I don't know how to tell you this, but his name was Donnie Thornberry. Not Johnny. Donnie." Looking at his confusion and disbelief, she even did a Google search to show the truth. Unfortunately, nothing could be done now, since the poor puppy has had the name for 4 years. "He'll have an identity crisis," he remarked.
According to a report by Victoria Advocate, a study revealed that 28% pet owners choose food-related names for their pets, based on how "delicious" it sounds. 32% make traditional picks, and a few others choose historical or even human titles for their companions. The highest percentage (37%), however, was for pop culture icons and fictional characters, just like how the man had planned. Although he regretted messing up the name, the date's reaction to his mishap won hearts online.
Soon after the post gained traction, several users expressed their thoughts on it. u/DragonInPlainSight wrote, "The great thing about dogs though, is that Johnny and Donnie sound so similar that the dog will likely respond to the new name just fine if they wanted to actually change it!" u/StellarTitz shared, "I did the same thing to a kitten. He looked so much like the large character from Labyrinth and I kept calling him Bluto. It's Ludo." u/Bard2dbone revealed, "A friend dated a woman who has a dog and a cat. She said their names were Kat and Doug. Then she pointed at the cat and said, 'This is Douglas.' And she pointed at the dog and said, 'That is Katerina.'"
