Her date refused to watch 'The Odyssey' over Lupita Nyong’o’s casting — his explanation left her no choice but to leave

Their first date was going smoothly until one conversation revealed a side of him she never expected.

First dates are often about discovering whether two people share enough common ground to build a connection. While differences in hobbies or opinions can usually be discussed respectfully, some beliefs reveal fundamental values that are far harder to overlook. That was the case for TikTok user Grayson Smith, who shared an unsettling dating experience on July 17, 2026, under the handle @grayson.smith12. She recalled meeting a man for what initially seemed like a pleasant first date, with the conversation flowing naturally between different topics. Everything changed when they began talking about Christopher Nolan's latest film "The Odyssey." Expecting nothing more than a discussion about movies, Grayson instead heard a remark that immediately made her question everything.

To start with, her date quickly dismissed the film, explaining that he had no interest in seeing it because Helen of Troy was being portrayed by a Kenyan-Mexican actress named Lupita Nyong’o. Confused, Grayson asked why that mattered. That was when his theory completely left her speechless and not in a good way. He responded by saying Helen was supposed to be "the most beautiful woman in the world," according to the fiction, and bluntly insisted that the actress could not fit that description. Stunned by the comment, the creator asked whether he genuinely believed a woman of color could not be considered that beautiful. Without hesitation, he replied that he did not.

The exchange left the woman feeling physically sick. So, rather than trying to argue or change his mind, she quietly gathered her belongings and walked away. Although they were in a public place and she did not know how he might react, she decided she no longer wanted to spend time with someone whose views made her so uncomfortable.

Reflecting on the experience, the creator said she has stopped feeling obligated to stay in situations simply to avoid appearing rude. She encouraged others to do the same whenever it feels safe, reminding viewers that no one should feel pressured to remain on a date after hearing something deeply offensive or unsettling. Walking away from the wrong person is sometimes the quickest way to make space for the right one. Protecting your peace should never be mistaken for being impolite.

Viewers were equally appalled. @sewcial_distance said, "These are the dudes putting 'non-political' on their Hinge profile," while @juleswritesthis commented, "I would seriously question the judgment of anyone who thinks Lupita is not one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood." @balugaugauga wrote, "Mind you, Helen of Troy is a fictional character, child of Zeus and a Swan. Hatched, not birthed."
