Her mother-in-law cut her 6-year-old son’s long, curly hair because she thought it looked feminine — his confession left his mom fuming
Children learn to develop confidence and stand up for themselves through their early interactions with family and friends. When those experiences are undermined, it can affect their self-esteem. Threads user Miracle Grimes, who goes by @miraclesw0rld1, shared a post on April 18, 2025, after her mother-in-law attempted to damage her 6-year-old’s confidence over his long, curly hair. She claimed his hair looked “like a girl,” and made one statement to convince him to get it cut. When the mom learned what her mother-in-law had done, she was enraged.
The mom assured her child that it was his body and he could make his own choices. However, his grandma thought differently. She repeatedly said he “looked like a girl.” She kept pestering her daughter-in-law by asking, “When are you going to cut that boy’s hair?” or saying, “People are going to think he’s a girl!” but to no avail. One day, when the mother-in-law was alone with the 6-year-old, she took him for a haircut. When Grimes found out later, she asked her son what had happened, and he replied, “Nana said I had to. She said boys don’t have long hair.” The grandma wasn’t apologetic. Instead, she said, “He looks so much better, don’t you think? He was starting to look like a little girl.”
Grimes was furious because it wasn’t just years of carefully grown hair that were gone, but also a stereotype forced onto the boy. The 6-year-old had worn his hair long since he was a toddler. He loved his hairstyle and felt confident, often saying it made him feel like a “superhero or lion.” Seeing how it built his confidence, his mom never forced him to cut it or change his hairstyle.
“My blood was boiling. But I had to stay calm because I didn’t want to make him feel bad about something that wasn’t his fault,” Grimes added. Eventually, she put her foot down, spoke with her husband, and decided to put his mother on a “time-out.” Grandparents can offer invaluable guidance when it comes to parenting. However, they must also remember that every child is different, and parents have their own boundaries while raising their children.
In another instance, a mom was furious when her mother-in-law slapped her autistic son, claiming she was teaching him a life lesson. When the boy refused to share his toys with his cousin, the elderly woman reportedly turned violent and raised her hand at him. When the mom learned of this, she used the same approach to explain why her actions were wrong.
After putting on a piece of jewelry from her mother-in-law's box, the daughter-in-law insisted that the older woman share it. As expected, the mother-in-law was upset and refused, only to be slapped and reminded that it was her own way of correcting and instilling values in someone. She added that she informed social services, but since it was an isolated incident, not much could be done.
