Her Uber driver cried after learning she was blind — then one comment about 'fixing' her changed the entire conversation
Disability doesn't make someone incapable. Instead of encouraging this thought, one should always make people with disabilities feel included. A woman named Beth, who is blind, had a difficult encounter with her Uber driver that left her disappointed and frustrated. Beth, who goes by @the_blind_girlie on Instagram, shared her Uber ride experience on Thursday, September 10, 2026, revealing that her driver cried after learning she was blind but also made a comment that left her questioning opinions people have about individuals with disabilities.
Beth shared that during a recent conversation with her Uber driver, he was moved to tears after finding out about her blindness. The conversation happened when the driver initially refused to allow her guide dog, Churro, to enter the cab. After Beth explained that she is blind and that Churro is her guide dog, the driver asked her several questions about her blindness and life. She was happy to answer them until he made an unsettling comment. The driver told her that he would pray for Beth so that she could be "fixed," expressing that no one deserves to be blind and that he felt awful for her. This statement did not sit well with her.
Beth expressed, "I do not feel sorry for me. You should not feel sorry for me. And I also don't feel like me or any other disabled person needs to be fixed." She emphasized how disabled individuals need to believe in whatever brings them peace, hope, and happiness. She further added that believing that disabled people need fixing and that they are the problem instead of the world is annoying. She asserted that she doesn't need to be fixed, nor do any other disabled individuals.
Beth also highlighted the importance of creating an accessible world where people with disabilities feel equal to others. "My blindness isn’t the problem. Inaccessibility is," she stressed. Reflecting on her conversation with the Uber driver, she mentioned that while they had a nice exchange, his ideology that disabled people need to be fixed was troubling to her. Speaking about her disability, Beth noted that many positive things have come from her experience as a blind individual. She shared that people often text her, saying that after they lose their vision, her Instagram page gives them hope and helps them.
Such incidents remind us of the importance of including people with disabilities in society and ensuring they do not feel different from others. Instead of isolating them, we should focus on making every service accessible for them. In another story, a blind woman and her service dog were refused service by a cab driver, and Uber even initiated a refund of $20. However, another cab driver accepted her and her service dog. Rather than keeping the refund, she passed on the refunded money to the next driver who accepted her ride.
